Confirmed HPV - What about HIV?

I am a 32 year old male (not circumcised) that received oral sex from female CSW in Shanghai, China. Condom was used from start to end. CSW licked and sucked scrotum. No kissing or other contact with her mouth. 6 weeks after exposure I noticed growth changes below the head of my penis - these growths became larger and I decided to consult with a doctor. They were flat, skin colored and not there before the exposure. The STD clinic experts told me that they saw "nothing alarming" and that they confirm that it was not HPV. I went to see a dermatologist (senior guy) for a second opinion and it took him less than a minute to diagnose me with genital warts. I am married and should not have had this exposure. I have tested for all other STDs except HIV - I am now very nervous and need to know if you think I should get tested for HIV. My questions:

1) Multiple Doctors on Medhelp claim that it is "very unusual" and "rare" to get HPV from receiving oral sex, yet I did - does it increase my risk of HIV?
2) Based on my description would you recommend HIV testing?
3) Could the HPV transmission have happened when I removed the condom? In other words from her saliva coming off the condom? Or could it be that she was using the "wrong" condom?

Thanks a lot and thanks for a great service!

oral sex is zero risk inregards HIV. Nothing to worry dude. if you get HPV it doesn't mean you also have HIV. No HIV testings required.

Indeed, you have no HIV worries whatsoever from this exposure. STD questions should be asked in the STD community.

Thank you for your quick answers. So the 1 in 10,000 risk the doctors are quoting for receiving oral sex is basically what you call "no risk", right?

It's a statistical forecast, but in reality there has been extremely few cases of, if any, HIV transmission reported from oral sex alone between a HIV+ and a HIV-.

So the fact that I contracted HPV does not change any of your opinions as far as the need for testing goes? Do you think doctors would recommend no testing in this case?

We can't speak for the Dr's on this site or anywhere.

You do not need testing.

And I do not believe you have HPV either from protected oral sex.

That number is merely a very conservative estimate- there are no confirmed cases. You can't catch HPV, HIV, or anything else through a condom and it's no risk for HIV and probably close to zero risk for HPV even without a condom. I agree with Vance that your HPV has absolutely nothing to do with your encounter in China.

Thanks a lot for your quick replies. I have not had another encounter, never had HPV before and certainly have no reason to suspect my wife of infidelity. That said, I think it is strange too, especially after reading more about it. Do you know if flat genital warts are easily misdiagnosed? I guess I only need testing for my own sanity then. I'm sure you see this all the time, but this is really stressing me out.

Visual exams can often be misdiagnosed. A biopsy should have been done and tested.

Thanks. One final question; if I decide to get tested (for my own sanity primarily) - do you have any good stats of the prevalence of false-positive results with rapid HIV tests? I may be suffering from the 'internet research' syndrome, but there seem to be quite a few cases out there. Needless to say that is the last experience I need right now. Do you have links to stats or figures from studies that you can share?

Can't have a false positive from a no risk encounter.

So bottom line is: "don't even waste your time and money getting tested"?

Bottom line is you didn't have a risk and don't need testing.

Woohoo! Rapid test today and it was (as you all expected) negative. I don't know if you have been in these type of situations personally, but the work you are doing is truly tremendous! It is incredible what fear, anxiety and guilt can do to your common sense and perception of risk. I see myself as a very rational person, but this time I simply froze. Anyway, thanks for your help and keep up the good work! For other people that are worried, I would like to share a quote: The nurse that was helping me today had been with the Planned Parenthood clinic for 1.5 years, she estimated that she does more than 5 HIV tests per day. "I still have not seen a reactive test". Think about that.
