I made a very foolish mistake in the heat of the moment with a guy I trusted as telling me he was neg. I was the insertive partner of unprotected sex. Later that day I found out that he was HIV positive! I immediately went to the ER and started PEP within about 14 hours. I tested neg at that time. A couple of days after the start of the PEP I had a sore throat, some night sweats, and diahrrea last lasted about 2-3 days. I think the sweats and diahrrea were all anxiety-related or from the start of the drugs as I never had a fever. I don't think I was eating well during that time either due to the mental paranoia. I never had any other signs of seroconversion and had felt fine since...even with the harsh drugs in my system. I knew that my risks were somewhat minimal for infection, but now, about 6 weeks later, I had a couple of days of swollen lymph nodes on both sides of my neck (none in the armpits or groin), sore throat/neck muscles, sweating again, but no fever. I have an order for my 6-week post-PEP HIV that I just have not had drawn yet. What I am having trouble finding is some good information on what is COMMON, not just possible, as symptoms of seroconversion. I'm sure that each person is a little different in the way they react to the infection if it is there, but what is most commonly seen? Is a fever almost always a symptom? If so, how long would it last usually? If the lymph nodes swell in reaction to the infection I would assume it would not be localized to the neck, correct? The other thing I cannot seem to find is how soon after infection would one start seeing symptoms of infection? Two to six weeks is what I am seeing as a range, but could it be possible to start seeing symptoms within 2-3 days? I have always been one of those people who never have a cold, flu, or anything that causes me to be feverish for more than 1/2 a day or so. I know everybody responds differently to viral infections, but since I am usually a short-term responder to illnesses and they never seem to knock me down too much, could I be one of those people who I have read about that might not even show any symptoms..or very minimal ones? I am really just looking to get a feel of how common and how severe most people's symptoms usually are. Are the symptoms usually like one of the worst flus you've ever had?
