HIV - Blood in Eye & Glass Cut Risk

Hi, all. Please let me know if I am at risk for HIV from these to encounters.  I was in Canada on vacation a couple of weeks ago and we left at about in the morning and came back at about 3:00pm. When we left the maid was cleaning the suite beside our suite. We had already been staying in this suite for 4 nights and had a 1 night stay left. When we returned she was outside of the suite and she could barely speak English, but she said that she was finished cleaning our room. I thanked her and walked in. Within 5 minutes of entering the suite, I went to the bathroom to change clothes. I touched the door knob to enter the bathroom. I then laid down to take a nap and felt something in my eye that flew in from the sheet. I began probing my eye with my finger to get it out. I did not think anything of this until at approximately 9:00pm, I was sitting in the living room area and pulled up a stool to coin a scratch off ticket. As I was pushing the stool back under the table, I cut my finger on a piece of glass. It was bleeding pretty badly.  I thought that maybe the maid had broken a wine glass and tried to clean it up and did not get it all. I know that this glass was not on the stool before we left because I had used this stool continuous throughout our 4 day stay there.  I did not think anything of it, I washed it with warm water and put a bandaid on it. I awoke the next morning to brush my teeth at the vanity mirror and I saw smeared blood finger prints over the mirror. I know that these fingerprints were not there before because we had been staying in the suite for a few nights before.  Immediately, I began worrying on whether the maid cut herself on the same glass that I cut myself on. I know that she used the stool to stand on to reach the vanity mirror to clean it. I do not know the maid's HIV status. About 8 days after this, I had noticed that my eyes felt like there was something in it and felt swollen. Both sides of my jaw and neck swelled up. My ears felt full.  I did not have an earache, sore throat, fever, or anything. I went to the doctor and said that I had swollen glands in these areas. So I became more worried.

If the maid cut herself on the small piece of glass before 3:00pm and then I cut myself on the same piece of glass at 9:00pm,am I at risk for HIV?  I saw the piece of glass that cut me, it was very tiny, but I did not see any visible blood on it.

I know that the maid cut herself because of the fingerprints that I saw over the vanity. If the maid touched the bathroom door knob with her bleeding hand and I touched the door knob 5 minutes later, then touched my eye - Am I at risk for HIV?

I am very worried.

thanks so much

One, you've bumped an old inactive thread.

Two, you're incorrect.  The HIV virus begins the process of becoming inactive IMMEDIATELY upon exposure to the elements.  The outer shell of the virus becomes damages, hence it losing its ability to infect.  Without the outer shell intact, the virus cannot latch onto the target cells in the receptive partner that would allow for transmission.

Please do not post inaccurate info.  Educate yourself first.  We prefer not to frighten our posters/readers with incorrect info.

Hi Emmahelen ,

I am sure that Puppiov cannot contract HIV from this case because blood would have dried by then and dried HIV virus cannot survive.

But I would also like to point out that your idea that hiv containing body fluids become inactive as soon as exposed to air is very wrong !!!!!!!!!!

Even in open air we should avoid contact with blood and semen .(yes oxygen contact does reduce infectivity slightly )

Absolutely no risk at all.

Once exposed to the air the HIV virus is almost immediately deactivated, the situation you have provided is in no way at all a HIV transmission scenario.

Move on and forget about it, it simply WILL NOT happen in the way you suggest.
