HIV Concern

Doctor,

I'm concerned that I may have HIV. First, I had two sexual encounters with commercial sex workers. Both occasions I used a condom and believe it was fully intect afterwards. One 32 days ago and one 21 days ago. On day 20 and 9 respectively I took a anti body test, DNA PCR test (with other STDs being tested as well). All wer non-reactive or negative.

My concern is that the DNA PCA test was too soon for one or both encounters to be considered accurate (i'm especially concerned about the first encounter becuase I did not finish - think I held the condome and got whatever secresions were on it on my hand and then finished with my hand after she left).

1) I would like to know the accuracy of the DNA PCR test at 9 days (% if you have that)
2) The accuracy of the DNA PCR test at 21 days (% if you have that)
3) Chances of transfering vaginal secretions from a condom, onto a hand and then onto a penis causing infection

I will go for an antibody test at 6 weeks and again at 3 months, but I have some symptoms that have made me concerned as well that I would like to describe and have recieve comment.

After ~5 or 6 days from the first encounter I had a flu like illness for 2 days the persisted with extreme fatigue for 4 or 5 days. My wife experienced the same thing 1 day after I had this illness. Currently I have the worst acid reflux that I have ever experienced and it is not the typical burning that I am used to, it is burping and belching 20-40 times a day which is totally new for me. I have headaches, a sore neck and some minor muscle and joint aches right now as well. A few days ago I had a sore throught and I think my lymph nodes were becoming swollen. I also seem to have trouble concentrating and possibly blurry vision over the last week.

My wife has just experienced a misscariage at around 7 weeks or ~24 days post her possible expoosure. She is still misscarrying and has shoulder pain and trouble sleeping. She is not aware of this possible concern.

4) Can these symptoms be indications of HIV?
5) Can these symptoms be indications of other STDs?
6) Can this mean the misscarriage was caused by an STD or HIV?

I have been experiencing major anxiety (over HIV) and now major emotional stress (over the miscarriage). I have a lot of guilt and concern. I am in graduate school and have a very demanding full time job also. I think much of my health concerns are anxiety and stress driven, but have this great fear it is something much worse.

Any help you can give me in terms of assessing these concerns is very much appreiciated. Also any suggestions you may have in terms of a path forward would be a great help as well.

Thanks for your time.

Thank you for your addressing my questions...I wish you could say more about the PCR DNA test with the understanding that it is not an approved test for diagnosis.

My take away is that you would not recomend any further HIV tests other than for self assurance and routine checkups in the future.

Your comments have made me feel better. I'm glad I posted my questions. Thank you very much for your time.

2. see one
3. no risk
4. No... You never had a risk
5. All STD questions need to be asked in the STD forum
6. No, because you didn't have a risk and don't have HIV.
