That's right--any HIV test that looks for HIV1 & 2 looks for all those groups aswell.

I don't know if mine was an Elisa it was an antibody I think,  that looked for HIv 1 and two, My question is simply this, despite fact that the strains are rare, or Whatever, will they ALL either be HIV 1 or HIV2 and does the rareness  of the strain matter in the respect that a negative blood test for HIV1 and 2 would look for ANY strain since they would either fall under HIV 1 or 2. I aprreciate your patience. Thanks.

Look--HIV1 is the most common--HIV2 is very rare & mainly found in West Africa.Stop worrying about rare strains. If you had a risk then test & the test will indentify both strains if you are infected.

Thankyou. So every group with a letter assigned to it,  with either fall in the category HIV1 or 2 right??? And no matter how rare a strand is it will either fall under 1 or 2. My concern only was I has ALOT of unprotected sex lol so I figured I could've been exposed to any number of strands. Glad there are only 2 types.  Thanks.

Thanks so much. I'm just trying to educate myself since I've already had a few exposers but tested negative for 1'and 2. So when people refer to strands like "O" or "M" it doesn't matter what strand they are talking about they HAVE to fall under HIV1 or HIV2 correct? Thankyou.

No.  There are only two types HIV 1 and HIV 2.

Also is there such a thing as HIV3 or HIV4 or rare strands, and if there were would they be picked up on the test for HIV1 and HIV2
