Is a negative test at 6 months conclusive?

I was in a relationship with a person for 4 months I've known this person 10 years. We had unprotected sex a few times. The last time was in January 2009. I tested negative twice. Once at 5 months and once at 6. My question is should I retest in another 6 months and do you think my chances of the test being negative are good?

Thanks

People are never positive after 3 months...you are negative no need to test again.

I'm just confused because some say to be completely sure you should retest in another 6 months. Do you know how often people pop up positive after 6 months?
