If 5 weeks is reassuring to you then yes it's reassuring. The 12/13 weeks result will be conclusive which is better.

by cluelessintexas, Jul 21, 2007 07:56PM
that should have read 12-13 weeks

So does a 6 week test worth anything, besides just being a 6 week test?  Have you seen any research that suggests that if one obtains a negative @ 6 weeks that it should be negative at 12-12 weeks?

by Teak, Jul 21, 2007 08:06PM
To: cluelessintexas
I've seen negative tests turn postive after 6 weeks. I'm not saying everyone's test will turn positive after an exposure after a 6 weeks test, but yes it happens. It all depends on the antibody build up in the body for the test to detect. Not everyone builds up antibodies as quickly as some. That is the reason a 3 month conclusive has been applied to the test, so that it will catch anyone that has a slow antibody production. I've also seen the positive tests when retested, were actually negative.

That's what I figured.  I don't see how they can slap an accuracy percentage on a 6 week test.  I felt a little better after the negative 6 week, but I'm uneasy again.  I'm scared it's going to change.

How often have you seen people test positive for HIV after one exposure?

I don't keep count; I've seen it happen to many times to count. I have a very close heterosexual friend that tested positive after being infected by a female friend that didn't know that she was infected, one time exposure. She has since died, and he and his wife are living very good lives. Yes they still have sex (protected for vaginal) and unprotected for oral and have for the past three years. She tests every year. I suggest anyone that gets confirmed HIV positive to move over to AidsMeds where there is support for newly diagnosed positive people. It's also a very good site for lessons on transmission, drug therapy, and research. They can also help you with ADAP programs for medication if needed.

Wow..  that's so sad, for the girl to be infected and not even know. I think everyone should know their HIV status and if they're unsure to put a condom on.

Teak have you seen someone turn positive after a negative 3 months test?

Aidsmeds? I'll never make it. Its sooooo depressing over there. You said 1 time exposure, what do you mean?

by scaredgrl85, Jul 21, 2007 09:57PM
To: bigdummy
he means after one exposure with a male or female unprotected anal/vaginal sex.

by bigdummy, Jul 21, 2007 10:00PM
The woman gave it to the man, man this stuff is sad.

Honestly how do you even know if someone turns from negative to positive from 6 weeks to 3 months? Your not with that person 24/7 to see if they had another encounter between that time period they're not confessing to or they had other exposures they don't think they were at risk for. We only know what we do so Teak I take it back about if anyone turns positive after 3 months because it wouldn't make sense to know anyways.

I was asking because I know my date of possible exposure.  My 6 week was negative and I still have 7 weeks to wait until my 3 months, so that's why I was asking.  I'm so scared again.

by cluelessintexas, Jul 22, 2007 12:38AM
OMG, I'm terrified again. =0(

hello clueless,
I have a 11 week negative test and still not sure.I have consulted doctors and they said 11 weeks is near to 99 precent but still 1 percent chance(symptoms with protected).
Now i am thinking I must have waited for 2 more weeks to test so that there will be fullstop.
I have heard 6 weeks is 95% but who can say 100% about a test which is at less than 13 weeks...
Websites say that average time for seroconvert  22-25 days (but this number games Sh..T)
6 week negative is a very good sign but we need 13 weeks CONCLUSIVE result.
wish you best of luck
coz

Please don't be scared. Your negative, trust me. I know your afraid cause the guy gave you other STD's but those are much easily transmitted than HIV. Was this a one time exposure or did you have sex with him unprotected on different occasions?

by cluelessintexas, Jul 22, 2007 10:48AM
To: cox
I know 6 weeks is NOT a 100% guarantee.  I just thought it was a pretty good indication of what the 12-13 week test results would be.

by cluelessintexas, Jul 22, 2007 10:56AM

It was a one time occasion.. but if you read my message from teak.. He has seen people (many times) come up positive after 6 weeks AND those who have one time exposure.

I'm so scared.

Yea, I read teaks response, and did you read mine? The counselor even told me the same thing. The reason why they say 3 months is so they can catch everyone in the window period, but people lie. People have more than one encounter or they don't know exactly when their encounter was. Don't worry, please keep us posted as to what your results are. I was in the same boat as you. I got chlamydia and thought I had everything in the book. It wasn't the case at all. I tested negative after 3 months and 1 week and if you've seen my threads I still had some doubts, but it's normal after being through something so traumatic. You'll be fine and I'm here if you need a female to understand what your going through :)

Well I know when my ONE horrible encounter of possible exposure was.  I still have nightmares about the whole thing.  I knew two days after that something was NOT right.  I went to many docs and they thought I was CRAZY.. but I'm NOT.  I contracted herpes from that MF.  I felt icky and just had a feeling.
I wish I were crazy and didn't have anything at all.
I hope it's just herpes and not also HIV.  That would suck.  I don't know if I am strong enough to handle both of those viruses.

The nurse that did my rapid blood test, told me that this is only an eighty percent accuracy.  I even asked her.. EVEN IF I haven't and don't plan on having sex with any outsiders ever again.

*sigh*

I would jump for joy if my 3 month comes back negative.  I've never been more terrified in my life.
Did you get tested at 3 months and 1 week or 3 months and again at 1 week after your 3 month mark?
Thanks for your support.

by scaredgrl85, Jul 22, 2007 11:26AM
To: cluelessintexas
I got tested at 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and at 14 weeks all negative.

Did they confirm that you have herpes? Did you do a culture or anti body blood test?

Don't worry, hang in there, you'll be fine, this is a lesson learned for all of us. I'm going to get tested Aug 2nd again, the day i'm leaving for vacation, just to get a COMPLETE CLEAR MIND.

I am going to get another test @ 8 weeks too, when I go back to OBGYN.  They have me coming back to test for what type of herpes that I have.  When I got the test it was only 4 weeks out and there were very few antibodies there.

I hope it's negative

You are in the clear.. Relax.

I knew him very little, through a friend of a friend.  He put something in my drink..

I tried contacting him right after it happened and asked him to take a test, he said he would and swore that he did not have any diseases... but lied.. and now has disconnected his phone number.

That's just makes me think even more that he has something to hide.

I hope so too, do you still communicate with this guy?? Ask him to get tested, you'll feel much better then. Did you have any symptoms of herpes?

by scaredgrl85, Jul 22, 2007 08:17PM
To: cluelessintexas
I'm a bit confused you said there were few antibodies and you hope it was negative but then you said you tested positive. Did you break out in sores?

That sucks he did that! What a freakin jerk! Well I used to take ambien, that's no big deal and a lot of people use bactrim and they don't have HIV.

Try to look at the positive aspects, like you have a 6 week negative. Yea people may turn positive after, but what are the chances that YOU will. Keep your head up!

by cluelessintexas, Jul 22, 2007 08:19PM

He has cut his phone off and has moved.  I just feel like he was positive..
He injected steroids, took ambien (insomnia is common in patients with HIV/AIDS), and took bactrim (used for HIV/AIDS)...

I tested positive for herpes.  I did NOT have it before.  So, I know I got it from him.
He was VERY rough with me and made me bleed internally during the vaginal sex.

I wish I had a gut feeling that I was going to ok.  I hope everything stays negative.

Thankyou.

didn't you just get your 3 month negative???

by cluelessintexas, Jul 22, 2007 08:29PM
To: scared
The test for herpes-- I tested positive for and there were few antibodies.. which is why they could not detemine the TYPE of herpes.

I know it's not a big deal to take ambien, as I now take it too.. BUT to have all of those elements at once.. injecting steroids (which can be used during "wasting" in HIV/AID patients), taking bactrim, AND ambien..

I am trying to look on the bright side of things.. but there really arn't a whole lot.  There is still a chance that one can test positive after a 6 week negative.. I hope I am not one of them.

I have a gut feeling your going to be ok. From everything you tell me, that's my honest feeling.
But you still need to take a test at 12/13 week to finally put yourself at rest. Good luck!

Congrats on your negative.  That's great news.  I hope I can say the same thing in 3 months.
