A PCR RNA test is specifically used to monitor (not detect) those infected with HIV. However, the test can find the virus directly and detect the current quantity of HIV in the blood. This test helps Doctors keep their HIV infected patients CD4 count high by monitoring how much of the virus is in the system and slowing it down with HIV medications (meds).

The PCR RNA test can detect the virus a couples days (7 days to be safe) after infection until the infected person starts taking HIV meds that control the virus keeping it in check by not allowing it to replicate. Effective HIV meds can trick the RNA test into giving a false negative, but this trick occurs with infected persons who are taking HIV medication. RNA test should be takin 28 days after the most recent exposure just to be sure that it renders a conclusive analysis. The RNA should be takin with the antibody test to ensure conclusive results. The RNA test will detect the virus if you are infected until you start taking HIV meds that reduce the virus to a undetectable level.

The HIV DNA test simply detects the virus in the blood with the same time frame as the RNA test (28 days). I have heard the DNA test is not very good at detecting subtype E HIV virus. There are serveral different types of the HIV virus and the E type is hard for this DNA test to pick up for some reason. I believe with this test you'd have to ask your infected partner/one night stand/ sex buddy, etc.. there virus type if they are infected, aware of their infection and of the type of infection.

Both tests are very sensitive. The RNA test will sometimes give a positive result when you are really negative. The percentage of this is low, but it happens and can be emotionally scarring. After 28 or 30 days post possible infection take this test. If negative (Great!) retest 90 days (2 months later) post exposure and close the 3 month window period. If positive go see your doctor! Follow up with an antibody test after 90 days to ensure you are positive. Do not bury your head in the sand or that's were the virus will leave you.

Scientist and Doctors are making stronger HIV meds every couple of years. The virus will be cured sometime in the future. Unfortunately we might not be alive cause it could take 100 more years, but rest assured they will cure it!

Go see a therapist if you can't handle a negative HIV result past 90 days post exposure. Stress kills just as many people as HIV. In the future protect your mind and body by having safe sex. Use a condom and keep them visible in your room. Life is precious, fun, hurtful, spirit filled, and beautiful. Don't waste it being scared. Also don't diminsh it by making preventable mistakes!

Be well in the body and the mind!!!!!
