Needle stick

Hi, I believe that a few weeks ago I had been stabbed or at least punctured with a needle in my back and am looking for info about what the chances would be of getting HIV from being stabbed with an HIV+ needle. I know the chances of getting HIV from a needle like a pin needle are low, I am talking about a needle an IV drug user would use. I do have a little bit of an HIV phobia, but am seeing a counselor to help me with it, but wanted to know just for general information what would actually be the chances of getting HIV if i was stabbed with an HIV+ IV drug users needle. Any good information would help calm my worry and I would greatly appreciate it. I've looked around and seen that some posters like Teak really seem to know what there talking about with HIV if he could possibly help me and others. Thank you in advance for your help everyone.

Ok, well I got punctured high in the middle of my back right next to my spinal cord, I'm guessing there is no obvious veins running there so the chances one would be hit would be low I'm guessing. If there wasn't a chance unless you get injected in a vein then why are needle sticks considered a risk when people get stuck in like the finger? I know being stuck with a needle an IV drug user would use would be a pretty high risk of HIV since they pull back and make sure they hit a vein and then inject, leaving some of there blood in the needle for the next person, but from what you told me it seems like unless someone injected the needle clear into one of my veins after this person used it i shouldn't be at risk even if i did get stabbed or injected in my back or finger etc. Does this sound right? Again thank you for answering me and so quickly as well, I greatly appreciate it!

They aren't in real life. The sharing of works to shoot drugs in a vein is a risk. There has been over 900000 health care exposure to known people with HIV less than 160 persons have contracted HIV in that manner in past 23 years.

You believe you were stabbed with a needle? I submit that if you had in fact been stabbed with a hollow bore needle in such a way that it presented a risk for HIV infection, that you wouldn't just be guessing, you would definitely know for sure.  It would freaking hurt and you would know it.  C'mon, let this go.  You weren't stabbed with a needle and you don't have HIV. If you really believe that you were, then take a test, No point in guessing or in having anyone here speculate what the risk was.  That's a waste of time.

What I would really recommend is that you seek mental health counseling if you think that you were stabbed with a needle.  That's a level of paranoia that seems to be asking for professional assistance.

Thank you for answering me back, I didn't realize the risk was that low unless of course you were a continual user and sharer of needles to shoot drugs, which i'm not. You have really helped me a lot thank you.

I hear where you coming from, I know the whole situation sounds crazy and highly unlikely. I said in my original question that I have an HIV phobia and have been seeing a counselor about my problem as of recently, I've just had a tough go of worrying about it lately and didn't know if I was somehow at risk and just needed some reinsurance about the whole situation. I am getting a test next week anyway just for my peace of mind, but I do know i need to look into some help and have done that and hopefully will let this go, thank you for your comment.

So i've heard it said that the first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one.  Kudos to you for being honest with yourself!  Collect your negative result and cotinue on with counselling.  You will be fine!  Good luck.

hi there
what does "Without an infusion into a a vein" mean?
does it mean that until something is NOT injected (like a drug or medicine)  there is no risk?
