Worries about an Indeterminate WB Test

A month ago I took my very first HIV test. I recieved and indeterminate Western Blot result. I just took another test today and the doctors words were not comforting me at all and so that's why I wanted to post this question. I will get the results in about a week. What are my chances of acctually being infected with HIV?

I had unprotected sex with a guy one time a couple months ago that I had previously briefly dated a few years ago. He gets tested for HIV every 6 months and has never come up positive. He took his most recent test 2 months before we had sex and it to was negative. This is what he says. People often lie, but he seems truthful. He said he only had one other partner since then and she also gets tested regularly and it comes up negative. I had some vaginal itching, discharge and inflammation which is why I did all of the STD tests. I had my period right after we had sex and was doing a lot of physical activity and so I think it was just an irritation from my maxi pad. I was walking a lot. All of my other STD and similar tests came up negative. Some signs pointing towards cold sores in the mouth was the only thing that came up.  Besides that I had not had sex for going on almost three years. Prior to that I had unprotected sex at random times during my adult life. I've had about 16 partners total and I'm about to turn 30. Most of the unprotected sex from what I recall were with boyfriends. Is it likely I have HIV? A week seems a lifetime away to hear the results and I fear how stressful it will be if the test comes up indeterminate again. I'd like to hear some other people's experiences or doctors opinions.

The guidelines are if an ELISA test is positive it is ran again if positive again then a Western Blot is ran. Is it possible that you are pregnant?

Thanks. I know that the western blot is the confirmation test. I've read a lot on this, but again every situation is different. I'm waiting for a second results now. They mentioned the Elisa test on my results, so I think it was done. The letter doesn't give a lot of detail so I could be wrong. It just has postive under the abnormal catagory and then a attached page that mentions both tests and says indeterminate results. It doesn't specify what came out what. Either way the western blot is more accurate than the Elisa. The WB is more specific. This is what I've been reading over and over. The doctor is sending me to a specialist if the same results occur again, but she says in her experience they've always turned out negative the second time. The Elisa could state a total negative, which would be helpful, but if it was postive it could be a false positive. I understand that. Perhaps they didn't follow protocol. I'll wait for these results and go from there. I'm not really concerned about the last guy having given it to me honestly. That's my major confusion. I'm more concerned about partners from years ago. It's always possible the most recent guy gave it to me and my body still hasn't fully developed the disease, but If I got it from someone, I don't think it was him. That would mean being it was two and a half years before that I had sex that I would for sure have it or not have it. That's why I'm unsure what what the results mean. Prior experiences and doctors advise would be so helpful.

Call your Dr back and ask if an elisa test was performed. If not then have that test done. 3 months after last unprotected encounter is conclusive.

So take an elisa 3 months after unprotected and if positive then a WB is done. WB is a confirmation test.

Well I told the Gyno that I had unprotected sex she ran all STD tests. I'm assuming they did an Elisa test first and it came out positive. I thought they were required to do that. When I asked at the second appointment she didn't specify. When I mentioned the Elisa results she just shifted to the WB results. Not sure what that means. I've seen other people having same results and it turning out negative, but everyone's situation is different. I'm an overly paranoid person to begin with. I'm not sure if this doctor is just trying to keep me calm till the results are in by saying not to worry that I more than likely am negative or if it's the truth.
