Condom effectivity with regards to HIV and birth control

Hi all,
I came across a lady today, who was mentioning that despite using a condom, she got pregnant. She very firmly confirmed that the cndom was intact when they finished the act.
So, she warned me that my act of protected sex is not protected indeed.

Teak,
I have seen a big post from you stating all the doctor's journals and artciles. But here is a practical example.
Is there a difference between condoms' performance for birth control and STD prevention?

The transmission of HIV and pregnancy cannot be compared as related to condoms.  If a condom remains intact and on the head of the penis, it will protect both parties from HIV.  With pregnancy, there are more variables, it is FAR FAR easier to get pregnant than it is to get HIV.  Apples and oranges.

We aren't talking about her and you wasn't with her when she had sex but you will be moving along.

Latex condoms, when used consistently and correctly, are highly effective in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In addition, consistent and correct use of latex condoms reduces the risk of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including diseases transmitted by genital secretions, and to a lesser degree, genital ulcer diseases. Condom use may reduce the risk for genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and HPV-associated diseases, e.g., genital warts and cervical cancer.
