If you didn't get a control line they would pitch the test. You would have been retested.

No, the control line is there for only one reason - to make sure it worked.
If the control line malfunctioned somehow, then you would not see the control line. If this happens the test is invalid, and it will be repeated.
Even if the test had worked properly, but the control line had malfunctioned it is still called an invalid test and it has to be repeated.
