count is lower in the morning than in the afternoon. I will not detail why, but physiologically this is normal. Exercise and other things can generate fluctuations too. Some viruses can make the WBC
go up, but most experts suspect that viruses cause the WBC to go down. On the other hand, bacterial infections usually cause a rise in the WBC count.
In order to really know if your WBC count is normal, you need to know what your normal range is based on previous history. For example, some people may run a "low" normal WBC count of 4.0. If they are symptomatic of "something" and a their WBC counts comes back as 10.0...the doc may say this is within the normal range. Well, this is only partially true. It may be more than twice that persons norm and is very likely to be an indication that something is going on.
Bottom line, your WBC counts are within the normal range and the fluctuation is probably normal. Heck, you could have 2 different blood samples tested at 2 different labs and I can almost guarantee the results will be a little different...maybe by 1.0 or more. I would not worry about this and it is no indication of any recent HIV infection. Again, some experts might say that a drop in the WBC count is more concerning regarding HIV...it just isn't clear at this time and more research is needed.
If you would get your blood tests in the am and then in the pm you would see different results. That's why someone that is HIV positive get their lab work done at about the same time of day each time they go get their labs done My labs are always done in the mornings.
I agree with Teak, no worries. Even if your WBC count did go up due to a virus which again is unlikely (usually this is due to bacterial infections or inflammation from somewhere in the body, etc) and it was due to HIV, your body has clearly rid itself of whatever was working on it and antibodies would be detectable. No antibodies at 9 wks is very encouraging.
What would you make of this reading? WBC at 13.2 and LYM% at 13.8. I don't understand why one was above normal while the other a lot under normal - both in the same time. Thank you.
