condom break/heavy symptoms

hi

I recently had unprotected oral, and protected vaginal sex w/a sex worker.  The condom broke unknowingly during the vaginal sex.  This happened about 3 months ago.

A couple weeks later I experienced heavy symptoms of ARS.  Fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat etc.etc.  At the time I just assumed it was the flu.

The symptoms went away about 10 days later and I felt fine for a month or so.  However, I began to experience night sweats on a very consistent basis for the next month of so.  Just about every night I have waken up drenched in sweat.  Also, I had some sort of infection in my mouth.  My tounge became very sensitive, and whenever I had eaten food I would have bumps pop up on the roof of my mouth.  Also, it became very difficult to swallow.

These symptoms lasted over 1 month, and while I was in denial, I finally dragged myself to an HIV specialist to get the bad news.  He said my symptoms looked like classic ars and the night sweats worried him heavily.  Also he said my mouth issues could have been candida(?).

He gave me an oraquick test and it was negative.  This was a suprise to me and made me happy, however the Dr. didn't seem to be as pleased.  I told him "wow this is a suprise I was already in the mindset that I was positive."  And he said that I shouldn't get excited and I should stay in that mindset until I get the blood tests back.

How accurate are these oraquick tests?  I still believe I am positive, because there are no other explanations for my night sweats/oral issues and the ars symptoms I had after infection.  Do I have any chance at all?

Thanks

My Dr. just called me and informed me that all my tests were negative!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  He took blood for the HIV, viral load, cd4 and other things.  He said everything checked out great!!!

WOW WHAT A FEELING

The questions I still have are:

What could my symptoms be related to?  Specifically the night sweats that are continuing and the oral issues I was having.

Also, what are the odds that my body just isn't producing antibodies yet?  It has been 91 days since the possible exposure.

Thanks and god bless everyone!

You have a conclusive negative test so the night sweats you are having are not related to HIV.

are you taking any medicine? do you have bad anxiety? how is your sleep?

LOTS of things cause night sweats, even small infections.

i dont think HIVers have persistent night sweats, unfortunately. I think youll be fine. The chance you have some rare strain is not even worth worrying about.

I tested exactly at 3 months to the day.

I am still having night sweats every night however.....I have no clue what this could be attributed to besides HIV

(excuse me if this is a silly question) Are there are strands/types of HIV that might not have been detected by my rapid test?

did you have your test at 3 months or during your symptoms?

Your rapid test was conclusive. You are HIV negative.

I had a condom break during vaginal sex and I didnt realize until I was finished.  Essentially that=unprotected vaginal sex...how could I not have a risk?

No, since the internal control worked, the test had to be done correctly.  You may never get an explanation for your symptoms, but the odds of you having HIV are minimal at this point.

well there is always a chance that the nurse who took the blood/test administered it incorrectly?

Also, there is no other explanation for the large # of symptoms?

I think your Doctor is too focused on your symptoms, which are notoriously poor indicators of HIV infection.  The rapid test shows that you are HIV negative.  The blood test is really not much more sensitive than a rapid test, if it is at all.  Follow your Doctor's advice, but there is really no chance that you have HIV now.

Thanks, I thought it was 99% regardless. I am only concerned because I tested negative at 6 weeks then intermediate at 8 weeks and then again negative at 8 weeks and two days. I am done playing this mind games, it is affecting my health.

At 2 months around 98% of those who are going to test + will have done so using OraQuick.

If you have taken the oraquick test at 3 months post exposure then you are almost certainly negative for HIV (something like 99.9% accurate). Even with all the symptoms only testing can confirm if you are positive or not. Also, a one time exposure such as yours is unlikely to result in an infection. However, it is good that you are testing because the slight possibilty does exist. A 3 month oraquick test is very reliable, so if your test was done at this mark you can rest your fears...I believe you will be ok.
