Risk of Exposure? Help please!

Hey everyone,

Thought I'd post a quick question as I've read through some of the forums and looks like people get good feedback here.

A little bit about myself, I've ALWAYS done my best to be as careful as possible (using condoms, etc.) despite the fact I've had many partners.  I was recently in a relationship (about a year) and we both had gotten tested for HIV and had STD screenings about 6 months into our relationship which all came up negative.

Now that I'm somewhat on the rebound I guess, I met a woman this past weekend in a local bar and proceeded to have sex with her later in the night (tequila was involved and I def don't plan on drinking that anymore for this very reason).  In brief, at one point during our intimacy, the condom must've broke because when I pulled out, the condom was about half way down my shaft and busted open.  I do not know how long I was in her without protection (maybe about 5 minutes or so?).  Needless to say I was somewhat freaked out from this.  I spoke with her the next day and she told me she was recently screened at her gyno with a pap smear and everything came back clean.  She also told me that she's a blood donor and gives blood once per year and has an HIV screening at that point which has always come back negative.  The thing that really concerned me was the fact that I was inside her unprotected and she had JUST begun her period during our sex (I know because there were blood stains on my comforter).

I don't think she'd lie to me about something like this despite the fact I just met her as we're both young working adults (both 26) and had a pretty mature discussion about this and both acknowledged this behavior was completely out of our character.  Does it sound like I'm at a high liklihood of having contracted HIV from this "romp?"  Also, would you recommend I get tested again?  If so, when?

Lastly, I don't remember ejaculating (about 90% sure I didn't finish because I was too drunk) but can't be certain.  In terms of pregnancy, does anyone know what my chances are?  She told me she had been on birth control up until about 2 days before she and I engaged in sex and she had just begun her period.  If this isn't the appropriate forum, I'll post my question in the pregnancy forum.

Thanks all for your help.  I appreciate it.

Thanks Lizzy,

I plan on being tested in about 4 weeks from the free anonymous clinic near my home.  I know they do an oral swab test and a finger prick/blood test so I guess I"ll see what the results have to say.  I had been in this position before when I was younger and swore to myself I"d never do this again given the anxiety associated with this mishap, but I guess mistakes happen.  Hopefully it's not one that I'll regret the rest of my life!

When this first happened years ago, I think I recall that even if you had sex with a person infected with HIV, it's like a 1 in 1,200 chance of contracting this from a single exposure.  I know that HIV doesn't discriminate, but I've also read that it's far less prevalent in developed areas and among heterosexual individuals (I live in New York and am a straight male).  Trying to provide myself with positive reinforcement until 4 weeks from now...

Yes,but remember that she tests every year and she was negative and also that DUO test is 99% conclusive at 4 weeks. The testing is so much better these days and far more accurate.Don,t forget to follow up at 12 weeks and try not to stress out.Focus on other things in the meantime.

doesnt sound like you have much to worry about...most ppl dont have hiv and most ppl dont lie about their status, when asked.

with that being said...you did have unprotected sex and the ONLY way to know one's status is by testing at the appropriate time.

the odds are with you...so DONT go nuts worrying about this and DONT sit on the internet looking for "symptoms".  anxiety will create very real physical symptoms.

test...it's as simple as that

Thanks "Getitright77,"

Looks like I'll be strung out about the possibility of having HIV for the next month :(...what a horrible feeling.  It's legit ruining my day every day since this happened.

You had what,s commonly known as condom failure and you require testing. It,s a great sign that she donates blood every year and gets tested for Hiv,however you still need to test.A duo test at 4 weeks is highly reliable and then at 12 weeks you can obtain a 100% conclusive result. All the best.
