Around 14% of Europeans have one copy of this gene (partial protection) and about 1 % have two copies (full protection against the most common HIV strain found in the US).

The gene is also found in European derived populations such as Latinos. i.e. 7% of Mexicans have one copy of this gene.

The CCR5 gene mutation has been shown to provide partial and sometimes complete resistance to transmission of HIV. A very small portion of Europeans have this gene from either 1 or both parents.
