I recently had a stapendectomy on my L ear. My doctor said, 'your surgery went perfect." A follow up appointment with my doctor 2 weeks later showed water in the L ear & a retracted ear drum in R ear. I was given Patanase nasal spray to use twice daily. I have been stone deaf since the surgery! Being very concerned I made an early appointment, had a hearing test done by his audiologists & the findings were nerve damage! I am on a 2 week Predisone treatment, praying this will give me some hearing back! The doctor said, "if you recover any hearing, it will be worse than your hearing before the operation." But, there is only a short time frame where hearing loss is reversible! Never dreamed I would be the 1-2% that experience nerve damage...It has been a nightmare! Hearing aides are to way to go! Never, never, never have this surgery.
This is a question you need to ask the ENT that will be performing the surgery. I would guess that it all depends on several factors (your age, hearing status, severity of otosclerosis) but I would guess at least a few months.
One important thing to think about.... the benefit vs. risks of surgery, especially if your hearing is your career. Sometimes, if the surgery does not go as planned, your hearing could get worse. Maybe you should consider holding off on surgery and trying some hearing aids?
