Wear/a/Jimmy is right. I have hearing loss and loud ringing. I started losing my hearing when I was 40 and now am 65. I worked near loud noises (jet engines, I am a female and was a secretary near the flight line) and that probably hurt my hearing; however, hearing loss ran in my mother's side of the family also. The hearing aids do help with the ringing like Jimmy said.
The Tinnitus clinic is also a good idea. They are up on the latest devices that could help you.
The best treatment known thus far is..... hearing aids. Yep the dreaded hearing aids. But they sure are not what they used to be. I bet the farm you have a hearing loss, hearing aids would both help you hear better, and mask your tinnitus ussues. But you have to accept that, & go to an audiologist and get tested.
Good luck
I'm not a professional but will offer some suggestions anyway.
Protect your remaining hearing from noise. Tinnitus (noise/ringing in the ears) comes with the hearing-loss territory. Save your hearing and prevent worsening of tinnitus.
For help, try a tinnitus clinic. I imagine that the American Tinnitus Association can give you a list of them, although you might have to join. Or ask your ENT to refer you to a tinnitus clinic. In our area, for example, there is the OHSU clinic, http://www.ohsu.edu/ohrc/tinnitusclinic.
There are medications, masking devices, and other things to help with tinnitus. Unfortunately, there is no cure. But you can make it less intrusive in your life.
Best of luck,
Nancy T.
