Chest Pain

Hi,

I am 30 years old 6" tall and 145 Lbs weight. About 4-5 says back I was having chest pain in between and an eneasy feeling. The pain was mostly on thr right upper side of chest. But somtimes it was moving to left side bottom, sometimes in the back(roughly centre of the back). The pain was not very severe but I had that eneasy feeling. I also had some pain the neck in between though it did not last for very long any time.

I had walked to one of the ER they did EKG, blood pr etc, even chest x-ray. They did not find anything. Also I was having burps contineously for that time. So the ER dr/ concluded that it could be because of some stomach problems. So then I visited another doctor(general phycisian), who did some blood work and said I am having "Helicobacter Pylori" infection. And has given some antibiotics. Its three days now that I am taking that medication. But today also I have some uneasy feeling. Some pain again on right side of chest/left bottom side of chest and also weakness in general. My questions.

1) Is EKG is a foolproof method for detecing heart attack? I have concern that I may still be having herat trouble but EKG is not detecting it.

2) Should I take a second opinion on my condition. And whom should I visit, a cardiologist directly or a general physician and then take a call from there.

Hello,

I am a 23 yr old male, and I too have been experiencing lots chest pains and discomfort in the right and left sides of my chest almost underneath my arm pits... also today is why I am writing. I came down with an overnight flu and my mid-chest/sternam is having sharp pains, feels like someone is giving me a bear-hug today and my head is feeling faint, the faintness and weakness could just be because of the flu... that I'm pretty sure, but I've never had sharp chest pains before when sick.

I have been noticing shortness of breath for a few months now and its getting worse, so I decided about a month ago to goto a walk-in clinic. I expected just an anti-biotic, but the doc said nothing is wrong with me, but I had better go get checked out with x-rays just to be sure. I went for 2 chest x-rays now and they also sent me for an EKG... The chest x-rays revealed a slightly dialated heart and the cardiologist said I have dialated blood vessels as well... the EKG confirmed that the right side of my heart is dialated, the left is normal from what I could make of her telling me. They referred me for a blood test and check up so I will post again when completed if they find anything. I also have noticed my ankles feel "heavier" than normal, but all this reading about CHF, is some of my pain self-registered in my brain the more I read up about it? I know for sure the chest pains are real, and there is something with me, they happen sparatically, most times when I'm busy I do not notice it, but when I'm at work on the computer I notice the shortness of breath, chest pains and weezing alot of the time. I also notice pains in my stomach on a regular basis and I'm always thirsty and dont' goto the bathroom #1 much, #2 I'm regular.

I will say that I am a fairly active person, in the winter I play hockey about 2 times a week, and through the summer I've been playing golf (noticing shortness of breath after finishing) and also playing tennis and basketball (also trouble breathing for about an hour afterward, but I dont notice anything during and can go full tilt in the game) I am 6'2 about 195-200lbs, I would say thats about average, slightly above average. I used to eat crappy all through college, was up around 210-215 and decided to smarten up and eat better after I started working. I try to avoid fast foods, but do have still on the odd occassion, I have subway about once a month, the rest I eat steak and other meats with greens like salad and veggies, I try to stay away from carbs like pasta, potatoes and rice (unless before heavy activities that I need the energy) but I do eat them on the odd occassion. I eat some canned foods and bake other frozen stuff like chicken fingers/balls and fries sometimes along with a few TV dinners when I'm in a hurry.

After saying all that... I went away to Dominican at the end of February for a vacation and near the end of my hockey season (mid-to-late March) I got really sick to my stomach, I started feeling the flu-like symptoms so I went and got Pepto Bismol from a variety store before hockey since I could hardly bear it. During hockey I was fine, but after I was so sick, I had horrendous pain in my stomach and was restricted to curling up in fetal position on my couch favoring my stomach with extreme pain whenever I moved slightly, I went upstairs and puked about 5 times (my first non-self inflicted puking since I was about 10 yrs old :) ), felt a little better then went to bed with some discomfort in my stomach. I still felt sick the following few days but felt better after about a week. But it seems that ever since that day, I started to feel the shortness of breath, including the next week at hockey, 1/2 way through the game I could hardly breath and I was taking shorter shifts which is not normal at all! I had just figured I was still recovering from the flu and it was still stuck in my lungs (and could it still be?) Also, about 1 week after my last season game, I took a #2 and blood came out in the toilet. Very gross, yes... but I thought it should be mentioned. What my question now would be after reading up about this "Helicobacter Pylori bacteria" is did anyone show similar symptoms? Also, is it possible I caught that bacteria or some other viral infection in the Dominican (from drinks and food) that is now affecting my chest and heart?

Thanks for your time.

Best Regards,
Jim

FYI--I had chest pains from drinking Crystal Light (aspartame) that lessened and totally ceased about 6 weeks after stopping using the product.  Is something different in your diet?

Hi Ashpar,
I just wanted to pass onto you that my mom also had H pylori bacteria in her stomach and went to the ER with chest pain too. She described the same thing you do, pain radiating up into her neck / very uncomfortable pain to say the least - she is not one to complain but it sent her to the ER. So if they did in fact find the H Pylori bacteria in you / I would rest assured that is probably causing that chest pain - and the uneasy feeling - its a painful bacteria - and it can stay with you forever until you fight it with strong antibiotics - my mom has it on and off all the time - she is constantly battling it - good luck!

Ashpar,

Sorry to read of your troubles.
(1) An EKG is certainly not a foolproof test for detecting a heart attack.  EKG's alone will only detect approximately 60% of heart attacks.  The diagnosis of heart attack depends on a comprehensive history and physical, ekg, and lab work by a thoughtful physician.

(2) The incidence of coronary artery disease in an otherwise healthy, 30 year old male is somewhere between 1 and 6%, depending on the types of symptoms present.  Seeking a second opinion from an internist would be the smart idea.  To find a board-certified internist in your area, try www.doctorsforadults.com or www.acp.org.

Hope that helps.
