Chest pain and anxiety?

by twlehew, Mar 14, 2008 09:51AM
Hi,
I'm a healthy 26 year old.  I'm 6'2 and 180 pounds.  My BP is usually 120/80 with a pulse around 72.  I've never had any health problems, but about a month ago I noticed that I had some pressure in my chest.  Not a lot, but enough for me to notice it.  Shortly after I felt like I was short of breathe.  Looking back I think that was more anxiety, because I went to the ER and they did blood work, chest X-Ray, EKG and everything was fine.  My blood oxygen level was 99.  I later went to my PCP and I had sinusitis, so he gave me some amoxicillin and I was fine, I also had some acid reflux that caused a lump in my throat and was the reason for my chest pressure. The chest pain went away, but I found that I'm constantly aware of my breathing.  I exercise all the time and I haven't noticed any shortness of breathe, but when I'm by myself my mind starts racing and I think 'Am I short of breathe?' and this causes me to keep taking deep breaths because I feel like I need to, but I end up getting dizzy because of the amount of oxygen I'm intaking.  I've also noticed that once I become 'aware' of my breathing, I start to breathe with my chest.  The pressure in my chest is back, but it feels more like a muscle pain, and I'm wondering if my anxiety and 'chest breathing' could be to blame.  I have the acid reflux under control.  Also, if I sniff air in through my nose fast (like if you have a runny nose) I feel the pain worse.  Any response will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom
