Concentric LVH

by Tjondon, Nov 02, 2008 09:30PM
I am a 32 year old male who had a history from 26-30 years old, of being overweight (6'4 300lbs), and high blood pressure and working in a very high stress environment, (probably a bit too much alcohol thrown in too). About 2 years ago I ended up in the hospital with a "Panic Attack" and subsequently learned about my Hypertension (it probably was around 150-160/100-110 most of the time)

In the past 2 years I hae made radical changes to my life, in an attempt to reclaim a healthy me. I used to play college football powerlift, and even knocked out the Chichago Marathon in 1999. Then I got into business, got married and got fat, the excesses of success. I make no excuses, I was just stupid.

I was given the tag of "Generalized Anxiety Disorder" given blood pressure medicine and more or less told to get some help for my mental disorder. So, I did just that, psychotherapy, yoga, martial arts, medidation, diet exercise etc. You name it I did it. Quit even my job, sold the big house and nice cars, went back to school, lost 60 lbs, got off of blood pressure medication (I am usually around 120/60 with a resting HR of about 40, I monitor 2 times daily). I eat textbook healthy, ride my bike about 100 miles per week and wieght train 4 days per week. Still need to drop about 20 lbs, but I am quite muscular.

But I could not quite shake having palpitations all the time, always there, driving me slowly insane. Occaisionally I would feel like I was going to pass out, like my heart was running on to the beat of its own drummer. Over the past 6 months or so, however it has setteled down considerably.

Just to be sure everything was ok I booked in with a Cardiologist, to have an Echo. I do have some anxiety issues and scared the poor guy with a BP reading of 180/100, I was terrified too, have always been that way in doctors offices. Did a stress test and did not even get my HR above 160, I can usually hit 190 on a hard hill climb (I have a HR monitor) and showed no problems (Other than the astrinomical BP)

The Echo results came back that I have Concentric LVH, which is not good. (I am about 12mm thick and normal is 10) The question I have is this, given my history, and current lifestyle of health and exercise, is it possible that the LVH had been thicker in the past and now is regressing?  What types of medication am I looking at, to fix this problem?(aparently it is fixable) How serious a problem is it, given everything else looks good? Do I need to go have a panic attack, or just keep fighting the good fight back to health? What would you do if you were me?
