Familiar Symptons

Have these symptoms ever been expressed to you:
1) the heart does a "flop" like something just opened followed by a "hollow" feeling and then a ticklish sensation spreads through the chest or
2) a series of sensations akin to "air bubbles bursting"

Are these variations of atrial fibrillation taking place?
(I know about the event monitors but wanted to get your opinion in the absence of one.)

And is it possible for afib to be taking place at such a low level that I can tell something is happening with the heart accompanied by an occasional shortness of isolated breaths but without the usual intense and irregular beating. Can afib be taking place when one is asleep without being woken? the bottomline for these two questions is when should I start the countdown for taking action if afib lasts too long (I believe 48 hours continously is what I read on this board). Many thanks!!!

I have been experiencing the same symptoms.  For atleast two years now, I would get a weird feeling in my chest, like something moved, fluttered, dropped, flip-flopped, very hard to explain.  It would only happen once in a while.  Never had panic attacks, only one that I can ever remember and that was because of being to high on marijauna (stupid when your young).  Anyway, in August, I had a bout with the flu, and just when I was starting to feel better all of a sudden one evening I had that feeling in my chest, but it happened like 5 times in a row, and my reaction, as it had always been, was to cough(don't know why).  Pulse starting racing, as it scared the **** out of me.  Didn't hurt, just very weird and made me feel so scared.  I had called the hospital that night and they didn't sound to worried.  I chose not to go in and handle it myself, and the next day the scared feeling was still there, just as bad.  Up until this point I had been a smoker (32 years old, been smoking since I was 11) and I quit right then.  Went to the hospital that evening, had an EKG, heart tracing, blood pressure, blood sugar test, thyroid test, all seemed fine, doctor said nothing wrong with my heart, all "probably because I was worried about it". ??.  Of course I was worried.  They put me on Lorazepam and sent me home.  Since then, I have had that weird feeling happen twice, maybe 3 times, but not 5 in a row, just once.  I am still taking the Lorazepam, which I hate taking because I do not want to end up hooked on them. I am overweight, and I am trying to lose weight, have been trying to change the way I eat, drink mainly water all the time, have no caffeine (never did drink coffee).  I am also taking fish oil, vitamin c (just started), magnesium and calcium every day (just started last week too).  I hate the way I feel.  I just don't feel right.  I have worn the holter, have had so many blood tests.  I have had problems with my stomach on and off for years (ulcers), and am waiting again to have a barrium meal and ultra-sound.  I have weird feelings on and off now, not sure where they come from, if it is my heart, esophagus or stomach.  All of a sudden I will get a weird feeling and then it spreads all over my chest, like it is burning and tingling, stomach in knots, pulse races, sweating.  I am so tired though of being told that it is all related to panic attacks, because like I said, I have never had them.  I am having these feelings in my chest and then, because I am scared, I start panicking.  I am trying to calm myself down on my own, but I end up taking half a lorazepam in the morning, and half at night, and I don't even let myself relax anymore because it seems when I do that I notice every little feeling or movement of my chest and stomach.  I am constantly thinking about it, and am so tired of it.  Just want to feel like myself again.  Please someone suggest what you think it is, as I have been having to try and diagnose myself because my doctor is not the greatest.

I am 53 years old and I too have what I call "bubbling" in the middle of my chest, followed frequently by light headedness and a feeling that I may pass out. I have contributed this to heartburn or gas that I get every time I eat. Along with this after eating I get a terrible pain low between my shoulder blades which require  Mallox or Zantax to relieve. But after having an EKG  which was abnormal, canceling a surgery I was to have on my neck and sending me to a cardioloogist next week, I am getting worried. I am a smoker but use no alcohol. I am very fatigued also but have been contributing this to only my MS.

I am 29, never had any problems with anything other than a broken bone and all of sudden, I had a rapid a beat, not excessively fast, but faster than normal and skipped beats - felt like a flutter.  It lasted for 2 weeks. I went in to the doctor, he did complete blood work, long and short EKG, and I wore a holter monitor for 24hrs. Nothing was found at all.  He said I had the most normal beat/rythm he had seen in a quite a while. Since then, it has gotten better, with laying down and at night.  I don't ahve the rapid beat at all, but can FEEL my heart beat.  Feels like a HARD beat.  And just 1 time at night I can feel a skipped beat/flutter.  Than I can go 24-48hrs without any just the hard beat at night or laying on the couch to watch tv.  I have cut out alcohol and caffine as much as possible.  I have upped my exercise routine as well.  Why won't these go away? How come he couldn't find ANYTHING?! I know I should be happy with nothing 'found' but on the other hand, I can't stop thinking about this, day and night, everyday, non-stop.  It is starting to wear me down as I worry constantly about it...anyone help me with this? What should I DO?

your description of your heart palpitations and your reaction to the same are remarkably similar to those posted on this site by other folks, including me.

i agree that it is difficult to believe that the condition, in most cases, is benign and that you should go on about your life with little regard for the palpitations.  this site, however, has been tremendously helpful for me in providing the sort of reassurance and support to do just that.

therefore, i would recommend reading other postings from the site.  i think you will find this informative and comforting. good luck.

Iam a little confused. If you are having symptoms that you believe are cardiac in nature why not talk with your physician and get an event monitor or holter monitor? Need to diagnose arrythmia first before you begin to worry about"countdown "

kevtt,

No, no one has ever described those symptoms to me.  I have no idea what to make of that brief, isolated description.

If you are concerned that you may have atrial fibrillation, then seek help from your doctor. The workup may include an ECG, echo, and holter or event monitor.

A recent study showed that patients with palpitations frequently felt that they were better able to "feel" or "sense" their heart rate and rhythm than the average person. Testing of this hypothesis showed it to be invalid.

Afib can present with major symptoms or without any symptoms. A holter or event monitor will be able to help make the diagnosis.

Good luck.
