Is it safe?

Is it safe?

Hi,

My father had an Angioplasty operation 2 years ago and 2 stents were placed in his arteries due to cholestrol blockages. Since then he has been healthy and has been doing everything normally. We were planning to make a trip to an amusement park and I wanted to know how safe would it be for him to ride the roller coasters? Can the stents be dislocated due to the roller coaster rides? Are there any precautions we need to take for him?

thanks in advance,
Shivom.

No the stents, if deployed correctly, cannot dislodge. However, I am more worried about the extreme adrenergic surge that occurs whith these rollercoaster rides: this causes tachycardia, elevations of blood pressure and sometimes decrease in coronary luminal size. In most people this is well tolerated, but your father received 2 stents which probably means that he had  other plaque which was not severe and not treated. This plaque can include some less stable lesions, which may rupture when subjected to the increased flow of a roller coaster ride.
If he was my patient, then I would ask him if he has any symptoms of coronary ischemia, such as chest pain or shortness of breath. If not, and he is active in an aerobic exercise program, then I would say that the rollercoaster ride is safe. If he has any symptoms, the I would advocate a stress test prior to this event.
