It is normal and it took my wife's leg/foot many months to return to normal and almost 2 years later, if she drinks too much soda or has a lot of salt, it swells. Tell him keep it up and then walking helps it believe it or not. You want to build collaterals to the vein that was used from that leg. Good luck to you both.
