MVP and phlebotomy

MVP and phlebotomy

Hello,  thank you for this opportunity.

I am a professional female, mid 40's, with MVP +2-+3.  I take Toprol XL 25 mg per day.  I am asymptomatic and doing well.  No other health problems, exercise daily, Cardio appt./echos every 6-12 months.

I have an opportunity to make a lateral career move to the pathology lab. I would be handling blood samples, and doing some blood drawing.

My question are: 1.)  Would there be any additional health risks to my heart (endocarditis etc.) if I were hit with  sharps, dirty needles etc.??  2.) Would premedication be a possibility? (as I follow for dental work).

I have been trained in all safety precautions and would wear protective clothing. I've also had all the required immunizations, Hep B series, Tetanus etc. I passed the physical form with my mitral valve situation documented by my cardiologist. (and they still are extending an offer)! My cardio is unsure but is consulting other colleagues in this matter.
We have had a couple mishaps in this lab, one was minor, one was more serious, both fully recovered.

Thanks to any who can comment.

Thank you Dr.
Sincerely,
cristabelle

cristabelle,

Speaking from personal experience, occupational exposures from needlesticks or contamination can be quite scary.

First, usinf universal precautions is absolutely necessary, not from the endocarditis perspective but to minimize the risk of exposures to bloodborne pathogens. Phlembotomy itself has not increase risk for endocarditis and there is no need for premedication.

good luck
