Racing Heart at wake-up

by leftuncheckd, Feb 16, 2009 10:11AM
This is in reply to "racing heart at wakeup in the morning.

This is just my opinion but I feel the racing heart is caused by the brain going into self-preservation mode. The brain is starving for oxygen, and to compensate for the lack of it, it is making the heart pump more oxygen faster.

When my heart races upon waking up I"ve found the best way to get it to slow back down is to breathe. SLOW DELIBERATE DEEP BREATHING.

I used to be a good breather. My stomach would move in and out with every breath. Somewhere along the way, don't ask me when, I've gone back to being a short breather. Taking oxygen in to my upper lung regions only. This bad habit carries over and worsens while I'm sleeping.

Now that I'm aware of the problem I will start to practice better breathing habits. Some coughing occured at first, because I was out of practice. The dizziness comes from the rush of oxygen to a oxygen starved brain. The all-over weakness feeling comes from the adjustment from all body functions being all turned up to ultra-high coming back down to normal. I feel weak because I've been running all-out for so long. Now that I'm in relaxed mode my body is BREATHING a sigh of relief.

My brain is probably saying: You sure took you're own sweet time figuring out what was wrong. I'll be taking a timeout for the next few minutes. You might feel a little light headed, like you're getting stoned. That's just me(Mr Brain) getting high on oxygen.
