Relation between a flutter and a fib?

I had an atrial ablation for a flutter and just hours later I developed a fib.  Was this a coincidence or an anomaly or is this a common occurrence?  Can you explain?

Not really the answer to my questions. I had the ablation in order to end my dependence on drugs for treatment for a-flutter.  Only a few hours after the procedure I developed a-fib and had to have emergency treatment. Now I am more dependent on drug treatment than ever before. Is this a common occurrence after the procedure?  Had I been informed of this possibility I would not have had the procedure.

These two arrhythmias are related in that they are abnormalities of the upper chamber of the heart.  Sometimes it is difficult to tell the two processes apart based on regular testing and they may be confused for one another.  Other times they can occur together and are a consequence of the same abnormal process inside the atrium.  Treatment of both are typically similar and may respond to medications or an ablative procedure.
