Dear Jessie,
I have long QT syndrome that went misdiagnosed for years. I am 36 and the mother of two. I have complained of palptations since my early 20's and was told they are only PVCs and nothing to worry about. They have gotten worse the past four years so I persisted in getting them checked out. I have had many normal ECGs except for PVCs and PACs and a normal exercise ECG done in 1980's. It wasn't until this year I saw a long QT expert in Rochester New York. He did a table tilt test on me and saw my QT interval lengthen way above 600. I now have a defibrillator/pacemaker in. They tested my children and my daughter has it. He did a baseline ECG and it was normal. They had her exercise briefly and repeated it, her QT lengthened above 500. she has to be on beta blockers. She is 5. My point is if you are concerned about long QT you need to investigate it. You cannot feel long QT so the palpitations are another issue. Although during your arrhythmias long QT could be in there. One website to get great information on Long QT is sads.org. It is the Univ. of Utah SADS (sudden arrhythmic death syndrome)foundation. They are doing research on long QT also. One symptom of long QT is fainting or near fainting. I have many near fainting episodes, my daughter had one fainting episode at age 2. I wore the King of Hearts twice. Each time for 30 days. I went out running with it to record feelings I have when I exercise. It showed my QT lenghtening while exercising . The first results were missed by my cardiologist at home. It wasn't until I showed the Rochester dr that it was actually there. Long QT is often missed by many cardiologists. Good luck and do your research!!!
Hello!
I am a 22 year old with Long QT and I have set up a web site that gives some info on the disease, a page of the best Long QT Links, and also a section where people with this condition can submit their name and e-mail address, and it will appear so that others with this problem can contact them, or they can contact anyone on the list. I've had a rough time meeting others with this problem, and would like to have some contacts! The link is: www.monkeygirl.atfreeweb.com. check it out if you get a chance!
Take Care,
Carissa
Dear Doctor CCF Cardio JMP
Thank you so much for the prompt and reassuring reply. It's much appreciated. By the way, I saw the segment on the news with Tom Brokaw, Thursday nite news. Excellent. I follow the Cleveland Clinic on the internet daily, and always find it fascinating. In my "next life" I hope to come back as a dedicated, compassionate health care provider, as everyone at the Clinic seems to be! Hope we never need to, but if my family ever have any serious health care needs, we'd go to the Cleveland Clinic in a minute!
Dear jessie,
It sounds as though your cardiologist has done a very thorough evaluation and given what you have told me you should have no further concerns. the extrat hard beats may be PVC's which are very common in all of us. As far as the king of Hearts monitor, this provides and ECG and a QTC may be determined.
I wish the very best to you and your family for continued good health.
Sorry , but forgot to ask, do you know if the King of Hearts monitors acutally show the QT interval, or does it just show the heart rhythm/rate?
Again, sorry, meant to put in both the above questions, regarding the QTc interval. NOt the QT, there is a difference.
