high bnp blood test

by ejoli, Dec 05, 2007 12:05PM
About a week ago I suddenly swelled up. I  gained 8 lbs.in 2 days. Even my eyes swelled. So off to the Dr. I go since I have liver disease I assumed that it was related to liver. The Dr. called and said that my bnp is high.(267) Does this indicate congestive heart failure? I am only 47 years old. They are scheduling me for a ekcocardigram(sp) and started me on duritics.  Can chf come on suddenly like this? And should I be taking it easy or something?

If you have liver problems, it is not uncommon to develop symptoms of CHF due to back up pressure in the liver.  The fluid then backs up in the liver and you develop edema in the legs etc.  A BNP of 267 is above normal but it is not terrible by any means.  You should have an echo as well and watch your sodium intake strictly which means less than 1500-2000 mg per day.  You would need to ask your physician about activity level but I would think you might be able to do whatever you want, and rest when indicated.
