Thanks to Julia, Connie and all you guys for your support.

I had a terrible night!  My hubby is away on Business for the next 10 days and I think I was anxious to tell him what Surgeon said, so I could not sleep.  I had chest pains, irregular heartbeats that also kept me awake.  I think I slept something like 2 hours!

Julia, thanks for the tip.  I have a good friend that happens to be a Therapist and I am going to see her tomorrow if I can!  I have a lot to deal with now:  I have to speak to my Manager today to make arrangements for sick leave (unpaid!), I have to phone Medical aid and get authorization, etc. and I miss my hubby :(

but, I am keeping my head up and I can handle anything cause God will not give me something that I can not handle...

have a great day!  will keep you guys posted on developments.

Dear Smiley,

You will do amazingly well and be fine after this procedure. I went through something similar last May but you are much younger so will be up and about in no time, easy! It's good to get it taken care of now. I offer some advice though. When they operate on the heart it unleases tons of emotions for some reason so now, before the procedure, you might want to line up a therapist who specializes in this for back up. I found the emotions more difficult to handle than the physical recovery. It will pass but it's easier if you take care of it before hand. Your doctors are technicians and might overlook this. You're going to feel great again afterwards. Email me if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

Julia

Check out the Guidelines for Patients with Valvular Disease - It can be found on the "Health Pages" (there's a link up to the right).   The ACC and the AHA have presented a publication which includes information about when (and if) to have surgery.

Take care

I to have been diagnosed with severe mitral valve regur. I was told by my cardio dr that until my symptoms become worse they will wait.I wonder what determines surgery?
Good luck.

I just came back from my appointment with Thoracic Surgeon.  I am going in on the 25th and having my valve replaced/repaired on the 26 of March 2008.  All my symptoms indicates that my heart is already compensating for the workload and the bloodtest they did last week confirm high heart-enzymes and possible signs of beginning stage of heart failure.

He is first going to attempt repairing the valve but he is almost certain that I am going to need a Mechanical valve.  He is also going to fix the Atrial septal aneurysm, while I am cut open in anyway.

I am sure that, closer to the time, I am going to think about chickening out... but I am also sure that I am going to be 100% healthy again, after I have recuperated from op.

Thank you for your support!

jeanie 24- thanks for writing your story to me.  I really appreciate that.  I did talk to my primary care doctor about the thought that my MVP could be what is giving me the pain.  I'd describe my pain as just a little to the left of the center of my chest.  Sometimes it hurts so bad that I have to sit up while I'm in bed because I feel like I'm going to die.  It might only last for less than 5 minutes at a time when I have it.  But I have had instances where it could last for a half hour or more.  That is rare though.  Last Sept. during my bubble study and stress test they said that I had MVP with mild regurg as well.
I hope everything works out well for you.  Please keep me informed as to your progress.
Thanks.

Hi there!  I have Mitral valve Prolapse aswell and Cardio discovered it Dec. 2006 and graded it as being MVP with mild regurg.  I have been symptomatic for the past year and had Ablation done in Nov. 2007 to treat PSVT - but that is a condition that has nothing to do with MVP.

In Sept. 2007 I had my regular annual check-up (Echo, stress ECG) and MVP was still there, with mild regurg.

For the past 2 months I have been having Palpitations, feeling short of breath, chest pains (sometimes in the center of the chest and some times underneath my left breast) and muscle weakness with exertion.

Had Echo done yesterday and my mild regurg changed into a SEVERE regurg and Cardio called in the help of the Thoracic Surgeon and I have to go see Surgeon on 18/03 to discuss possible replacement!

No one knows what happened and why my valve deteriorated so fast, but it happened and I am going to be pro-active in dealing with it.

My advice to you:  make an appointment with Cardio and get yourself checked out.

All the best to you.  I sincerely hope that you will get good news.

No it's not like that, mine is more like a jabbing or pinching pain that lasts about 1 to 2 days and then goes away for weeks.

Sounds like you should check this out with your cardiologist.
It's hard to determine what the cause of you pain may be without a proper check-up.
Take care
