Question about c section procedure and heart rate monitoring.

Just a quick question. When you have a c sec and they put all the leads on you to monitor your heart during the procedure. Still question but is that an ECG/EKG that I have had before at my cardiologists office? I remember feeling alsorts of flutters during a very long and complicated c sec but the surgeons monitoring me didn't say anything was wrong.

Hi there,

I agree with the Doc on medication that could influence the heartbeat, etc. but if you feel dizzy or extremely fatigued afterwards, please get your iron levels checked and if heart flutters/abnormalities persists, get your heart checked out when baby is about 6 months old.

I say this because I had spinal C-section 2005 and during that op I had trouble breathing and my heart was erratic and 2 years later I was diagnosed with a Congenital heart defect (mitral valve) and needed OHS as I was in heart failure!

Hi, and the answer is yes. What is seen on the monitor is a continuous recording of the heart’s electrical activity. The ‘flutter’ feeling could be due to increased heart rate, which could be due to the medications given. If any abnormalities were seen during the procedure they would have been reported. If there are rhythm abnormalities they would have been detected in the EKG done prior to the surgery. If you develop symptoms of chest pain, breathlessness or palpitations, then consult your doctor for an evaluation. Regards.
