I am on 40 mg sotalol bid. The only thing I have had is chest discomfort but I had that before my study. So I have not called my doc about that.

They usually do put you in the hospital for monitoring when starting Sotalol. The complications following first time administration are usually dose related, so they titrate where they can watch you. Maybe the dose is very small and she doesn't think there can be a problem. I would ask, though. I'd like to know the new criteria.
My EP has always put me in the hospital whenever she changed my meds. When she put me on sotalol I was admitted to the hospital on a Friday morning and released Sunday evening.
they did do an EKG before I left hosp. And I have one sceduled for next week.
Thanks
The main reason to monitor sotalol is because it can prolong the QT interval, which is dangerous. Apparently your doctor does not feel this applies in your case. But, to make sure, I would check with him/her about it. Normally about two hours after you take the medicine they do an EKG.
I have not been on sotalol, but I was hospitalized when I started on flecainide. I'm thinking an EP study would provide even further information (than a few days of hospital monitoring) as to how your heart might react to the medication. I know there are a lot of people who start the meds at home. In my case, I was somewhat far from the hospital or my doctor's office, so she decided it would probably be better if I were "on site."
