chest pain with pain in both forearms//

Yesterday while at rest with company, I experienced a sharp pain in middle of chest, pain was in both forearms between wrists and bend in arms, sweating, hot, just a crushing pain, never had that happen before!  I went to er and all test came back normal, wanted to keep me overnight just to monitor, but I came home, and was told to follow up with a stress test.  I do have slightly high blood pressure and occassionaly have heart palpations,  Have not had those in a really long time though.  I did have a coffee energy drink about ten minutes before pain started (didn't even finish it).  Could that have caused the pain.  Any idea what it could of been?  Why a stress test if all blood work, ekg, and chest xray came back normal!

In australia they keep you hospital for for the 6 to 8 hour and wait for the results to come back before they release you. So keeping you in till they get the results is the senceable thing for all hospitals to do.

Sometimes it takes a while for blood work to come back abnormal.  Certain enzymes elevate when there is damage to the heart muscle.  It can take 6 to 8 hours for the levels to increase.  So normal blood work in the er is not 100%.  I would imagine that was one of the reasons they wanted you to stay overnight.  It could have well been the energy drink or something else not related to your heart but your doctor is doing what he should do and actually would be negligent if he didn't  My grandmother had pains in the middle of her sternum, it was a heart attack, so women can have "typical" angina symptoms.  My husband had a heart attack and bypass surgery...his pain was only in his shoulder and under his arm, EKG and blood work was normal in the ER.  Angina pain can be sneaky.  Good luck.

The answer as the the quesiton of why a stress test to me is tht you have a great pro active doc and they are making absolutely sure that there is no underlying conditons going on w. you. From what you've posted and i assume you are a female from your moniker you are not experiencing typical female issues if you are thinking heart attack or pre here.  I tend to agree w. Jerry it may very well have been the energy drink that set off a chain reaction within your body rebellling against you.  Women don't experience sharp pains in the middle of their chest nor do we have shooting pains in our left or right arms.....your symtoms don't match the red flags. I would just get the stress test done so that you can move on w. your life and def. stay away from anything that sends adrenaline shooting thru your system...no a good thing for the body.  It will be interesting to know what they find tho please post and let us know...we all learn from this community......good luck at your appt.

The energy drink sounds like a possible cause... high caffeine intake can cause a lot of problems for some of us.  It didn't bother me when I was young, your age, but it sure does now.

You did the right thing going to ER.  Seems like a good strategy would be to avoid caffeine altogether and see how it goes.

Good luck, you should be alright... don't think yourself into any symptoms from anxiety.
