Okay, do you folks ever stop to think that maybe your palpitation problem could be something small and possibly even mental?! The fact that you are all on here looking at this forum stuff is a great indicator that you may suffer anxiety.

Anxiety is a leading cause for PVC's and PAC's for me. I was born with two holes in my heart and a faulty pulmonary valve (fixed) but left me with left ventricular hypertrophy and a right bundle branch block. Both of these issues can cause palpitations. But for me they don't! Anxiety causes them. My palpitations scared the hell  out of me when they first came about. I cut out coffee, alcohol, exercise, sex and anything else that could spark a charge of adrenaline and bring about anxiety and palpitations.

When I first starting having palpitations-I will never forget the day- I got really freaked out. Being that I had the surgery I mentioned above I thought I was having heart problems again. But after seeing my cardiologist four times in six months and being told i was healthy I finally came to grips  with my problem.

-Anxiety- :(

In my own opinion there were two different types of anxiety that affected me, slow paced and fast paced. The slow paced was more of a stress type. It would begin maybe after caffeine or just some scary or stressful thoughts. I would slowly begin to become panicked having symptoms like sweaty palms and emotional problems like irritability and bouts of depression. That would start to cause palpitations without a charged heart rate so they were low frequency soft beats. The second was fast paced, fight or flight mode. This would happen before going on stage to perform (as i am a singer) or during a workout session. I would feel that rush of adrenaline go to my heart causing chest pain and a charged heart rate i could feel in my throat. The palpitations would come hard and at very high frequencies. I would eventually calm down but this would set off a strand of the slow paced anxiety for fear of it happening again.

I am no Dr. but only hope to be able to give some of you a piece of mind.
Cut anxiety from your life by reducing stress and whatever else may be causing it. Enjoy things like a nice cup of coffee, exercise and hobbies.  You owe it to yourself and your happiness, take charge of your life and stay out of the dumps about palpitations, heart conditions and etc. You only live once, and unless you physically have a reason to worry than just know it's all mental and your okay.

Remember that there is no study that proves people having palpitations are at risk for sudden cardiac arrest or heart disease.

One more thing..one drug I did try that worked without having to take stupid anti-axniety pills which seem to only make it worse by altering your mind, vision, and hearing was a beta blocker. It helped by blocking adrenaline and decreasing the intensity of the PVC's. It's called Atenelol. Ask your Dr. about it. It worked for me. Probably just mental but it pacified me until I could develop the strength and courage to fight anxiety down in the trenches.

After all in order to defeat anxiety you have to have the courage to kick the door in and hit the japs with the flame-thrower! Hope I was helpful! God bless and have a great day!! :)

sure in some people anxiety may cause palpitations.but not in everyone.i can be perfectly happy and relaxed and doing something i enjoy-in other words, far from anxious-and SLAM here com the palpitations with no warning or anything.they are scary and for me THEY produce the anxiety, not the other way around.

Hi rready i read your post...to me its kind of like what came first the chicken or the egg LOL...i agree with you in some of your post and yep it is proven like itdood and tom said that anxiety can cause palps to go a little crazy as Tom said thru adrenaline surges in our bodies when we become upset.  I think it is pretty much the norm to become anxious if our hearts start acting out and i dare say that the majority of us on this site have been there done that one for sure...i too take a low dose of antenolol to keep my issues at bay and have for the past 4 years before i had my ablation done and it works great for me for sure..i think the bottom line is what it is your doc says is the best plan of action on dealing with palps and i think it is fairly common for alot of docs to prescribe a psychotropic med like anti anxiety meds to help take the edge off of the issue for some people but to me that is just "masking" the situation and not dealing w. it. Personally i think alot of those docs are GP's because heart docs tend to take the bull by the horns and just deal with it and do their treatment plans. Adrenaline in alot of peoples cases that suffer from palps or whatever is not their friend and have to be blocked ie: beta blockers.  For most of us on this site tho thru extensive testing we know what has caused out situations and many many of us i think were diagnosed w. a specific disease or symtom and thats why we were treated w. meds or some sort of surgery.  I am so glad that you found something that has worked for you and its great that you've posted a pretty directed opinion on possible other causes....it really does help others no matter the treatment plan or what other opinions are .....like Lisa said "we are a support community" and here for each other no matter what the situation is.....i for one found your opinion to be thought provoking when i read it..... i loved some of your comments they made me laugh my butt off because i felt the same way as you a few times.like i was fighting a war with an unseen enemy......thanks for your post and paying it forward rready06................

Be careful with the beta blocker recommendations.  Those have been documented to help in two classes of palps, either tachy enhanced arrhythmias or indifferent arrhythmias.  BBs will make brady enhanced arrhythmias worse.  That happened to me.  Same applies to CCBs.

I agree, I think anxiety and depression can enhance benign idiopathic arrhythmias.  But there are tons of peeps on here with structural issues too.  It's a chicken/egg scenario.  Did the propensity towards arrhythmia make someone anxious or did their anxious personality bring out the arrhythmia?

I know someone who's in bigeminey and he had no idea.  There's an example of someone who wasn't anxious yet the PVCs are constant.  He's got diabetes.

Anxiety itself doesn't cause "palpatations".  Anxiety causes the adrenaline level to rise which in turn may cause elevated pulse and/or arrhythmias in those susceptible.

You sound just like all my dr.s for the past 20 years.  I kept complaining, they kept telling me it was anxiety.  It's not.  I have documented NSVT.

Stress might aggravate, but not everyone's palpitations can be solely attributed to anxiety.

to me, it doesn't what causes the dreaded things and whether you get 100 or 50,000 they are no fun to deal with and can cause anyone to have anxiety over them or feel like we're going to die from them - I would trade my problems for anxiety causing ones any day of the year :P

that's just my personal opinion and I would never judge someone else for the way they feel or how they handle symptoms; we are all different individuals from all walks of life and handle things differently...what a world this would be if we were all super human and never let anything bother us and all coped the same

I'm here to get help and to help others because of what I've been through.  I have compassion and understanding for others who have or will go through the same or similar things as I have...that's what a " support community" is about.

I think if you took the time to actually read some of the situations on this site you would find that most, if not all, the people on this site have already been verified by generals, cardiologists and EP that their conditions are valid. Now anyone with, as you mentioned you have, with mental problems, would tend to judge, opinionate and jump to conclusions on this site without really delving into each persons situation. Most people, I have found here, are just wanting to talk to someone in the same situation and communicate with regular people to relate their situations. I have seen and experienced many many helpful people on this site.

So my suggestion would be to go to a site that handles people with mental anxiety problems and leave the grown-ups, on this site, to handle their very specific problems.

Pete
