Can atenolol 25 mg be taken as needed?

When I was on Atenolol, I had to take it every day, at the same time every day.  In order for it to work properly, there needs to be a certain level of the medication in your system.

It is a drug, therefore I doubt if you can take it whenever you feel like it.

I believe Atenolol must be taken as a maintenance dose.  You can't pop one when you feel that you need it.  for example, If the doc say 25mg/twice a day, you need to follow that.  What kind of tachycardia do you have?
