WARFARIN AND AFFECTS ON THE BODY

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF WARFARIN CAN LOWER YOUR BLOOD COUNT AND AND ALSO LOWER CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D LEVELS?

I take warfarin everyday.  I had aortic valve replacement in 2001 and had an artificial heart valve installed.  The downside to that is I will have to take blood thinners for the rest of my life because of the artificial valve.  That is not the case with a tissue valve.  It has really not had any affect on me at all.  The one thing that I know warfarin affects is Vitamin K.  Vitamin K is what causes your blood to clot.  Therefore the warfarin cancels out some of the Vit. K to make your blood thinner.  I have to have my Protime (PT) checked every couple of months to make sure my blood is not too thin or thick.  Really no big deal.

BTW, it doesn't lower blood count, just the ability to clot.

As far as the calcium or Vitamin D I do not know of any effect on those vitamins from taking warfarin.  I will also check with my pharmacist per Sassie's suggestion.

I have never taken Warfarin, so I am not sure, but, I would suspect it might, sort of makes sense, but, I am not a pharmacist. If you feel comfortable with your pharmacist, why don't you ask him; let us know the answer, I am curious now.
