Post hemorrhoidectomy recovery?

I had an external thrombosed hemorrhoid flare up 4 months ago and apparently did not take care of the clot very well because now, I am left with a decent sized skin tag. I got referred by my GP to a colorectal surgeon who told me that it was a thrombosed hemorrhoid and that it would need to be excised and stitched up - basically a full on hemorrhoidectomy - which of course, had me freaking out.
I am a 20 year old female and very active (like to lift weights and play sports). I would like to know if anybody has had a similar experience/procedure and how long the recovery time took. The hemorrhoid has caused significant self-esteem issues (as well as general cleanliness issues and discomfort) and in order to fix that, I now feel like I'll have to give up something I love doing for a while if I go through with this.
