Ann8 Re: Milk Thistle

Hi, Ann8,

I am still taking milk thistle.  My PCP and GI both said it wouldn't hurt but its medically unproven.  I have not had any lab work done since I started.  Even if I saw an improvement in my ALT I guess I couldn't attribute it to the MT but I'd sure be inclined to keep taking it.

HR has a list of supplements he recommends to support liver health.  MT is on there.

You are e-antigen negative and what is your viral load?

Since, you are guys are talking about supplements, here is another promising cure which made some headline a while back.

http://www.rediff.com/news/2003/may/09shobha.htm

Now, I dont know a lot about it or how effective it is, though It might be of some interest. It is also marketed as a drug called "Virohep" [ google for it ] but dont think is FDA approved yet.

Interesting about the coffee, thanks Steven for sharing.  Also, if you guys have time read Andrew Weil's book on Spontenous Healing.  He has some good tips on helping liver cells once they die, etc.  He did mention Milk Thistle, Dandelion Tea, eating artichokes, and staying away from saturated fats, alcohol, etc.  I know these are not quick fix me up cures, but anything to help the liver to do it's work.

Where did you read the stuff from Palmer?

It was once on ****.org

No longer there.  I know I printed out a hardcopy somewhere.  When found, I'll scan and send to you.

That should be 4 8oz cups of coffee.

I gave up everything else.  Smoking. My occasional glass of wine or beer.  Diet pop.  I watch my diet...I have to have something.

Where did you read the stuff from Palmer?  I'd love to read it.

I drink more than one cup a day for sure.  Half-caf or decaf but probably closer to 8 oz cups.  And decaf green tea.  She said not to take the pills?  HR  says to take them.

I never used artificial sweeteners but I did have a diet soda habit until about 6-mos ago.  I had about one/day for a few years.  I moved to seltzer water and then just to tap water.

Treatment does change the supplement protocol.  Everyone check out gauf's journal at the Hep C board for HR's Liver Lovers supplement advice.

Everybody checked in for this thread...the quest for wellness :)

I am tempted to try MT but I don't know, especially with treatment.

If I do, I make it into a personal study.  Since I have a series of labs and know my baselines, it would be interesting to see if it changes if I take supplements.  Will let you know if I take the plunge.

Dr. Melissa Palmer mentioned that coffee is good but like only 1 cup a day.  Green tea is good.  She mentioned to drink green tea but not to take green tea extract pills.  Someone else mentioned not to use sweetners since its not know how they are processed in the liver.

Cally and Jack:  Good to see you.

Ann: do read cajim's post on treatment.  I think you two may have similiar presentations.

yeah there are many benefits to milk thistle, also try to drink dandelion tea, that is really good on the liver.  Have you heard of Dr. Andrew Weil, read some of his books...he has a chapter in one of his books on treating the liver..naturally.

Milk Thistle is not a cure for HBV but has some properties that keeps  liver cells damage in check.

Just like Zelly, i have  been on Milk Thistle for sometime. I sometimes take it in combination with vit.E & C. and Complete Thymus Complex.
Research has shown some promising effects of both vitamins in liver diseases.
My last combination was MT & Liver Essentials which is a liver detox.
I decided to detox to start taking Phyllantus niruri. A herbal extract known to treat hep b and kidny stone. I take P. niruri with Echinaea which stimulates the immune system.
Milk Thistle is common on the net and at affordable prices.

Please note that the above stated herbal products are just food supplements which might have some degree of potency in treating liver infection. They are not medications nor cure for HBV.

I started the milk thistle about a month ago.  I take about 450 mg/day.  The dosage was tough for me to determine.  I ended up using this website: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/milk-thistle-000266.htm

I also take green tea extract and I drink green tea.  I don't take much of the extract (and I take a decaf variety) and I green one cup of green tea a day which I'd like to increase but then I'd have to drink less coffee.  I don't take any other meds at all. No vitamins either.

I got the milk thistle at Whole Foods.  Its widely available and the cost varies.  I don't even know how much it was.  Maybe a bit more than a multi-vitamin.

I'm thinking of adding curcumin/tumeric to my routine but I'm not sure if I should wait for my next set of labs before I do.

May I ask when you started on milk thistle?  At the same time, did you take other things for liver health?  Did you feel any side effects?  What was the dosage and cost?  Thanks.

Why are you worried about biopsy?  You're worried about the procedure being painful or worried about what the results will show?  If its the former, then go over to the Hep C board where it seems that nearly all have been biopsied and report that it is inconvenient and boring but not painful.  The procedure itself seems to go quickly (5 - 10 minutes) and you are usually given a light sedative.

Since you cannot do combo, I wonder if HR would recommend starting with IFN and then going to an antiviral.  He mentions it on the post to cajim.

My Dr suggested Biopsy & commented -ve antigen will be a tough one. I will be meeting him this coming Tues to discuss further. I'm very worried about Biopsy. Keff did mention treatment can begin w/o biopsy in his research paper. I'm thinking of going w/ treatment & do the liver scanning instead. Combo will be too costly w/o insurance....

You might start a thread and flag HR who is a doctor.  I'm not.  Here's what I understand.  The standard treatment level for e-neg is 10,000 copies/ml or 2000 IU/ml.  If it were me I would probably pursue treatment keeping in mind that it is likely to be long term.

You have had a biopsy?

Put the salient facts of your case into a new post.  Age, gender, race, recent lab work, e-antigen status.  Put in the subject line: HR: e-antigen negative chb with high viral load; best treatment?  Pay special attention to his post to cajim, though, I think its a similar presentation.

Best wishes.

Just back from lunch. My VL is 86000 IU/ML last month which I think is pretty high for -ve antigen. Howver, my liver biodata showed o.k except ALT=50. My doctor said I could start treatment if I want to......What is yr take on this. Thanks
