i still dont get it

i still dont get it

what is the difference between hb "surface" antibody ....and hb "core" antibody

i want to know if i have ever had hep b before....which test should i get? my doc tested me for hb surface antibody and it came negative and the doc said this means i have never had hep b before>  but i thought i would need the core test to prove that.

Positive former = you are immune now; positive latter = you had HBV exposure before.

so a negative surface ab does not necessarily  mean i was never exposed in the past? it just means im not immune and thats it?
