2nd Procrit shote HGB 8.8

Hi All, had my second procrit shot friday. HGB was 8.8. Hematologist was not concerned. Said procrit takes time. Don't know how much more I can take. Can barely walk across the room. Has anyone else gone thru this? Why is relief taking so long? I am sorry for complaining but its so frustrating. I don;t know how I am in work today.

Like many others, I had to go the procrit route while on tx. Week 6??? I took first shot. The previous week I started getting out of breathe just by walking from room to room. My HMG only went down to 9.4 I think but I was GASSED!!! It took about a week for the drug to stop the real shortness of breathe and a few more to really allow me to feel OK. At week 18 I had to increase to 60,000 units. The good thing though for me is that when I finished tx it only took my body a few weeks to regain a HMGB level that is within range. Hang tuff and please... Keep killin' those little critters!!!    Pauly

Hi there, When I started procrit my HGB went don to 8.7 and I was like you barely getting across the room.  The good news is it does get better with procrit, the bad news it takes about 3 weeks.  If it gets impossable to deal with you may ned to talk to your doc about a 1 or 2 unit blood transfusion.  That is what my pcp ended up doing to get me to a reasonable level while waiting for it to work.  Hope this helps

Take it from someone who knows firthand, this reaction is good and a sign that you are getting sufficient Riba.  My reds didnt get much below 11.8 and I almost passed out a few times.  In the end it was probably a sign that I was in for a future relapse.

It must be rough down below 10.  I would most definitely give myself a break.  Your two statements - about work and about doing things on the holidays - are pressure you dont need right now.  You are doing something now to permit you to have many more holidays and productive work days in the future.  I know you are saying that to yourself as well but it is really hard to give yourself a break sometimes, I know because I rarely did myself.  At some point though I just had to relax about things and you know what, when I got through I was able to pick back up and clean things up.  Good luck on PCR and on the Procrit kicking in.  RTS

I have to ask you this. With all we are going thru now with HepC weren't you afraid to get blood?

Yes I was but the devastating effects of low energy and not being able to move outweighed that.  I live upstairs (1 flight) and couldn't get up them except on my knees.  I couldn't even get to the kitchen without having to rest on the way.  And with all the blood being tested now I felt better than I would have 10 years ago.

What do you mean by your reds did not go below 11.8 and you almost passed out a few times and that being a sign of future relapse?
My blood never went down either below 11 something and I feel like I'm going to pass out almost all the time for the past 3 weeks.  On scaffolding this morning and very svared.
What do  you mean by all that?  I was undetected at 12 weeks and doctor said all is good.

Gosh you sound so much like how I feel. Please dont beat yourself up! Its the meds, it's the meds, its the meds! It is NOT you! I know how it is, and it makes you feel so worthless, but that is part of the deal of this treatment. I couldnt even shower and worse yet, I didnt even care! Try not to worryabout the holiday stuff, do some online shopping and forget it. Your health matters more. You are NOT a loser, you are doing great just hanging in there. Be NICE to yourself!
Hopefully you will feel a bit of energy now and again. Dont beat yourself up, you described what tx is like very well. Just know you are not alone.
Im thinking about you and sending you good wishes.

Hey girl!

It sounds like you ARE leveling out now.  You haven't dropped that much in the last weeks really, even though it SUCKS to be that low.

it does take time to work...and you might need twice a week to get you up where you need to be. Remember - that is what happened to me. Once a week kept me from continuing the crash but held me at relatively the same number.  It wasn't until I was doing Epo twice a week at 40,000 that my number climbed.

it does suck and I'm so sorry you are going through this still. I really had hoped by a miracle it would have gone better and faster.

Has the doctor said if they will continue you only on once a week or if they will do it twice to get it kick started?

I KNOW THAT FEELING. My bedrooms is on the second floor, I have to sit and catch my breath after that climb. Did u get chest pains? I can barely comb my hair. I went from being perfectly manicured at all times to a total mess. And the worst part is I don't care. If anyone says anything to me I either cry or get angry. I hate what I have become.

Yes, Yes, Yes... I felt all that. I was so mad that I couldn't even get 30 ft to the kitchen to get a glass of water or fix a sandwich without having to sit and rest.  I have always been very active and worked construction (painting) Always considered myself fairly strong and this just wiped me out.  Again the good news is that within the next 7-10 days you should be close to back to normal and between now and then you will feel better and better every day... Have patience my friend I know it is hard.

merlino - you have every right to feel bad with that hgb.  Just hang in there and stay as low key as possible.  Don't worry about the cooking and cleaning - sandwiches are fine and your son can make pancakes for dinner too.  This must be hard with the kiddos at home - I am sorry you got whacked so bad so fast.  Help is on the way with the PRocrit

return -- How are you this week. Has your relapse sunk in yet?  Formulated any plans?  I haven't.  I  am going to see the gastro guy this Thursday and will ask for another PCR and blood work up, and will listen to what he says, but I don't plan to treat with him again.  What about you?  You have done 2 - right?  Maybe you need to wait for the protease inhibitors.  I am thinking in that direction.

Hang in there!    I have not had any Procrit yet but have expierenced being tired from time to time.   Saturday I was so tired my husband said that I am walking slow.  Went home and slept 12 hours.  Felt better yesterday.   Last night I slept 10 hours.  I should have my test results today or tomorrow from my tests last week.
Be careful driving.  If you are that tired your response time could be way off.  Best of luck!

Hey, I was worried about you. Hadn;t seen you post and was hoping you were ok. Deb, this absolutely sucks. I went Friday and from 9.2 to 8.8. I started to cry like a jerk. Dr told me to hang on. I am tryng but jeez. These chest pains are driving me nuts. I keep saying one more week and I'll feel better. I am trying believe me. My boss keeps asking me things and I hear him but I don't. Know what I mean? I have to keep asking him to repeat himself.

merlino, are you taking the shot every ten days?  it is usually once a wk.  It seems that the lower it is allow to go, the longer it takes to climb up.  I felt better within 10 days, but then I only had to climb from 10.2. See if you can take it more frequently than every 10 days.

Move Above - what they are saying above is that Return believes that having bad anemia means that the Riba is working - and that because he didn't have severe anemia at 11...that the riba didn't work enough and perhaps that is why he relapsed.

That's not true though.  There are some people who just cruise on through treatment with no major issues. Stupid me tended not to believe that so for the first 46 weeks i did EXTRA Riba...much more than my body weight and voila I zonked BAD with the anemia.

I still have just as much chance of relapsing as anybody though - even though I had dreadful anemia. Half of the people here WILL relapse - half the people will not. End of story.

MERRY-
Oh D you just sound so bad. I think you need to ask the doctor after this week if you can twice a week it to get it going. My doc gave me Epo and I did 40,000 on Monday then 40,000 on Thursday type schedule so it was constantly getting pumped in and juicing me up. It's the ONLY thing that raised my hemo. I told you I had the same problem.....once a week just didn't do it I think when you get that low it'sj ust too low.

Believe me...I told you my boss is ALWAYS looking at me like huh how can she forget what I JUST told her ten seconds ago! But I just say "excuse me what was that". I told him all the effects of the meds so he knows. Still...he thinks Im a MORON I'm sure!

Even if you don't want to say WHAT you are on and what you have....anemia is enough of a reason to be zonked and an employee should understand. WHY don't they look at it like "wow I am so lucky my employee cares enough to come in...when they should be home" but instead my old boss was like "you look like **** how can you come in looking like this!"

It WILL pass. It sucks. It's not fair. Whine it's all you can do right now so WHINE AWAY!  You will make it. If I could you kNOW you can. Maybe they could give you a B12 shot I heard some people do that?

it will start getting better now.  I sure wish they would put you on 2x a week until it's ok though. You wait. When you hit 10.5 - you are going to feel ALL BETTER. It's bizarre.

Call me if you need me. You know I'm just laying in bed the minute I get home. My mom gave me an electric blanket for my chills this weekend. I cried like a baby. WHY didn't I get one a year ago?????

I mean it...you call me if you need me.

PS...IF we go by the anemia means SVR ratio then you are already cured LOL :)  I wish it worked that way.

Hi, Yeah I'm o.k.  Not myself but its been 6 months now. I have been laying down since noon today getting up for only a few minutes at a time.
Friday is last shot then doc says 6 days of ribe after that but I'm going to do only 5.   I need my brain back, I need my life back.
I have been reading about the hard time you have been having but it sounds like it should be getting easier for you soon.  Hope you and your son are doing good.
I have a little energy now so I'm going to jump onto the tread mill and push this weak blood around.
