Good move, but if you do have a "mild fatty liver problem" then you probably want to consider a low-carb diet like "South Beach" or "Sugar Busters". I believe those are two of the diets Dr. Dieterich recommends to those with fatty liver, but please check the professional archives on that one. Rock, this means no more three pounds of apples a day -- in fact it may mean NO FRUIT AT ALL in the very beginning (first couple of weeks) of South Beach diet. I lost ten pounds on a similar diet and three inches on the waist line.

A lot of good info here: http://www.southbeachdiet.com/sbd/index.aspx

Rock -- measure your waist and your height. Your waist should be at least one-half of your height in inches. So, say you're 6' 2", that means your waist should be no bigger than 37" -- and no sucking your gut in. LOL. Of course, this is just an approximation, but I did recently read that this might be a better measure than some of the BMI tables because it emphasizes the more dangerous belly fat.

Hey there,

It sounds like you may be really afraid (scared) to start. Don't put it off for the sake of the weight. Chances are the extra weight will be gone half way through treatment. I am afraid to start too.

"Half way through tx" may be too late as studies suggest that tx response may in part be determined very early, and in fact high bmi is a negative predictor of SVR. If Rocker is overweight, has fatty liver, he is wise to lose weight before treating -- esp since he failed tx the first time.

I have no problem with my foods and diet...for me its not what i eat but how freaking much...ive been using health foods as my comfort food...i guess i replaced all the partying with drugs and booze with excess healthy foods....i can drop 20 lbs in one week no problem...safely too...ive done it few times...lots of whey powder and green drinks...make my words....i will be 185 in two weeks...i could do it quicker but pound a day is safer..

If you're postponing it for weight loss (which I think is a good idea), why don't you take that valuable time and also look into getting yourself some alinia and PPC to help nail your SVR? If you're gonna do it, might as well stack the deck in your favor as much as possible. Maybe even look into a little riba predosing too.

I'm far from a nutrition expert, but my understanding is that a low carb diet will do more than just lose "weight" but it will also reduce your fat (belly and in the liver) better than some other types of diets. In other words two people could lose the same amount of weight but one might have bad lipids (high cholesterol, high triglicerides, etc) and the other could have good lipids. I assume the one with the good lipids will end up reducing their fatty liver more than the one with the bad lipids even though weight loss is identical.

Per "Mre's" thoughts -- if it were me, I'd also start pre-dosing ribavirin around 2-3 weeks before you start to treat. No studies on it, but it worked real well for FLGuy and Dr. Dieterich had some favorable comments on the subject. And since you're starting a bit late, you should have that xtra riba to burn, with your docs permission, of course...

You also might want to run this by your doctor and perhaps Dr. Dieterich...

A bit of the fatty liver topic...but this is interesting

Nearly 100 volatile organic compounds were emitted from these six products, and none were listed on any product label. Plus, five of the six products emitted one or more carcinogenic 'hazardous air pollutants,' which are considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to have no safe exposure level," Steinemann said

FDA at work protecting us..fine bunch eh?

And although cosmetics are required by the Food and Drug Administration to list ingredients, no law requires products of any kind to list chemicals used in fragrances.

I just remember that you mentioned that you eat a lot of apples. I think that there is a problem with this, as by eating too much fruit, you would be consuming a lot of sugar.

Just on a thought, considering that you have a problem with the amount of foods you are eating, you should maybe look into eating foods which actually burn calories. The cabbage family is good at that.

Or eating large green salads with a simple lemon, garlic, olive oil dressing. I have an awesome recipe, if you want it. You can sprinkle your algae/kelp on the salad, too. Delicious, if you are into salads. And then you would need some good proteins. Lentils are a great source of proteins. I also have a good recipe for lentils, if you want it let me know.

I need to say that I am not an expert at weight loss, as I have never been in the situation. But that's just a few things I know about nutrition.

Wishing you all the best, my friend.

Thanks for the info regarding SVR and BMI. I am new to this support group and when I read rockers question I thought that perhaps he was afraid to start.I was trying to be supportive. Where would I have found the info that he had failed his last TX?

I think you also said you ate a box of health bars? I don't know if that's healthy. But I'm not here to criticize anyone. God only knows there are no saints or angels on this board. We have all done our share of abuse.

My dad once told me "Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in his shoes". I took his advice and after I got a mile away, I turned around and criticized him, but by then I had his shoes...
