Dental implants 4 months prior to treatment, yes or no??

I am considering treating this fall. I'm supposed to have 5 implants 4 or 5 months before. Anybody know anything about this? I don't want my body to reject them because of inf. or riba. thanks, jm

I had an implant put in last year and starte this year.  I'm still waiting for the crown, but all healed up.  One person I spoke with had 4 implants done during tx.  But I would wait until they are completely healed and the post is exposed.  They are too expensive to take a chance.

Thank you Kalio1 for remembering that I contracted Hep C by receiving cadaver tissue/bone from a well-known Boston dental school.  I have 8 implants.

If you do have ANY kind of cadaver part put in your body you must beware.  Do any of you want to go through this again?  You would think you had a recurrance when actually you would have contracted it from a new source!

Make sure the tissue comes from a company associated with the American Association of Tissue Banks.  There web site is http://www.aatb.org/.  The FDA does not monitor tissue banks well and please remember what happened to Allistar Cooke not too long ago.  After death, unbeknownst to his family, his legs were removed and replaced with pipes to hold his feet on!  How horrible.  The New Jersey tissue bank company was in cohoots with a funeral director and they stole not only Allistar Cooke's body parts but many other people.  He just happened to be famous.

I am scared for everyone who will receive cadaver parts of any kind without checking into the source.  That includes tendons, veins, heart valves etc.

Oh, yes, I would like to add that my elective implants were installed in 2000 and after that I had many years of Interferon (not maintenance, regular treatments) ... it did not affect my implants.

I had 3 artificial implants (posts for crowns) between my treatments (about 1 month after the treatment and 1 month after the implants I started my next treatment).  For a couple of days I was on some sort strong pain killers.... but it was giving me unbelievable nightmares and I could not function at work.  So I stopped these pills and the actual pain was manageable without even Tylenol.

You will have 4 months prior to treatment ... by this time you will not remember that you ever had implants!

"Implant" the implants and don't worry, everything will work out just fine!

I put of implants till after tx. My cap fell of my front upper tooth about 2 weeks before starting treatment and could not be repaired.. I look like baby huey. I asked my GI doc if I could start the work and he flat out said, 'no'.

I started my implant process (extraction) while on tx however the anemia hit me very hard so I stopped until post tx. I think it was 5 or 6 months post that I had the surgery for 4 implants with bone build up on 1 tooth and that was artificial bone. It does take about 3 months of healing before you get the teeth.

I have recently consulted with the implant doc and he said the process takes a number of months even with no complications so even though you have a few months before you tx, I'd worry they would end up conflicting. I was told the same thing as the other posters about interferon and our bones and that it was not a good plan to do both at the same time.
I think you have some liver damage as I recall and that can slow your healing too so maybe it would be better to wait until the tx is over so you can do some healing on your liver, help increase your healing times and also maybe improve your platelet count. All those things matter with that type of intensive oral surgery.

Another thing to consider is what your specific implant scenario is. Do they need to add bone? If so, that has to be looked into. We recently had a woman post who contracted Hep C from her jaw bone implants they did when she had her dental implants done so be sure and research where the bone comes from should you need to have some added.If they do have to place bone, then the whole process takes even longer.

I concur with this bone softening....In the beginning of my TX ,I notice that my gums were swelling and that my teeth that has crowns on them began to wiggle and were sore.......My molars began to fracture and crack up,I presume from my nashing of my teeth ........I'm now due for some dental repairs. on 3 molars FOR SURE.......

I put off implant surgery during treatment on the advice of my nurse practioner. Don't know if it holds any water, but she said that interferon can soften bone which might interfere with the implant taking. On the other hand, my single implant was elective. If getting an implant now is important, I'd consult with both your ortho and hepatologist and come up with a timeline that works best for you.

I had my first implant last June. First they had to cut the gum and put in the post. Then the gum needs to heal for at least 3 months. After that the top, tooth part is put on. I had begun the process and planned to tx and then finish my implant. Before starting tx my gum was bleeding and bothering me so I had the last part finished sooner than planned. I am very glad I had the work finished before beginning tx.
   I would encourage you to either have the process completed at least a month or so, before doing tx or put off the dental work until after tx.

I had routine dental cleaning last week and for the first time in my life I could barely tolerate it.  My gums are so sensitive they were bleeding and I almost asked the hygienist to stop.

When I told her about the meds (although it was in my chart) she said that people on chemo sometimes have the same reaction.

The dentist says I need two fillings but I don't think I'm going back until after TX.

He had to give me Chlorhexadine Gluconate for the gum inflamation and bacteria build-up.
