Elevated Ammonia but no liver disease

I hope you can enlighten me somewhat in regards to this.  I have been told that I have HepC but my body cleared it.  Had elevated blood ammonia, doc did liver biopsy but it only showed fatty liver, no other liver disease.  Doc put me on Kristalose.  I have had many gastro problems for two years.  Was told I have IBS.  What I can't understand is, what is making the Ammonia elevate if there is no liver disease.  If I do not take the Kristalose, I become very fatigued and start having memory problems (not knowing where I am when I'm driving, unable to think of names, numbers, etc.)  Can you give me any other things that can cause elevated ammonia.  I am 55 yrs old, over weight, stomach looks pregnant, have lots of gas, and bouts of diarrhea even without the kristalose.  Thank you for any info you can give me.

A close friend has high blood ammonia and is becoming forgetful and confused. He had a liver biopsy which came back completely normal. He has been using Lactulose for a couple of months now and his blood ammonia level is still high. What would cause someone to have high blood ammonia with a completely healthy liver? Is there a certain type of specialist that deals with this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated? Sincerely, hst65
