An EGD will look for any anomalies in the throat; in your case, they will most likely be looking for any varicies (swollen blood vessels) that have been caused by the liver. If they locate any, they will band them while they are in there to prevent uncontrolled bleeding. The procedure is not intended to provide direct relief for stomach pain.

The treatment for HCV can begin as soon as the doctor says it can, and also when the insurance approves the medications. When did the doctor tell you that you could begin? It’s common for people that have cirrhosis to have EGD’s while on treatment, so that wouldn’t prevent you from taking the meds by itself.
