For those taking ribavirin to treat hep C, the normal dose of epoetin alpha is 40,000 Units, once each week. Because the ribavirin is smashing the red blood cells so rapidly, the dose is high. HOWEVER, you didn't mention hepatitis?? The dose of epoetin given without ribavirin varies, based, for example, on body weight. An example of dosing for other causes of red cell loss, such as you describe, would be 4,000 Units, three times/ week. If the epoetin is no longer taken, things should stabilize, return to normal with time. Your husband has been warned, I hope, to monitor blood pressure and call his M.D. or go to an ER immediately if he has any chest pain?
NOW you may take it. ONE more to go!

stay well.
I meant to add that I took 40,000 units of Procrit for 48 weeks in order to keep my RBC in a normal range while on the Hepatitis treatment medicines.
I am female, 46 and weigh approximately 135 lbs.
This forum is not able to determine what a normal dosage for an adult for EPOGEN would be. This forum is for people who want to gather information regarding Hepatitis C, the treatments of Hepatitis C and support for friends and family of people who have Hepatitis C.
Although, some of us do have to take a medicine called Procrit to assist us in keeping our RBC count in a somewhat normal level when we treat our disease with the Hepatitis C medicines. The medicines that we take can sometimes deplete our red blood counts.
You can go on to a search engine on your computer and type in EPROGEN and gather allot of information regarding what it is used for and the dosage.
Good luck to you and your husband!
I am 165lbs. or 75kg. I was on 40,000 U/ml once a week with no problems. Go to www.epogen.com to get other dosage guidelines and more information.
