Elderly Woman and Autoimmune Hepatitis

My Mom was diagnosed a few years ago with autoimmune hepatitis. She was in her late 70's at the time. She has been on and off prednisone. At this point, it seems like she is getting worse. Could someone tell me the signs to watch for as this disease progresses. Also, what new treatments are out there for this disease.

Hi Scott

Glad to hear you are feeling well, I am also.  Have you heard anything about removing old silver filling?  My dentist wants to remove all my old fillings, says that mercury can leak into body from the fillings.. I have been checking on this and there are 2 different opinions. It does appear that most think this is quackery and the other side thinks this causes autoimmune problems.  The dentist want to remove, then detox the liver and cap all my teeth to the tune of $32,000.  I just about fell over from laughter, I guess I'm cheap.  That's too much money for me. I still have to give her an answer, I'll ask my Gastor what his opinion is first.

Just a note, I let out a word.  AIH is NOT curable, it is treatable.

Hi I have AIH and am on treatment.  I have a few questions for you. Does your Mother see a Doctor regularly?  What type GP, Gastro, liver specialist? Does she have her LFT's (liver fuction test) done often?

AIH is treatable, but curable.  If I understand you, your Mother is not on any treatment right now. One thing my doctors have told me is if you have 1 auto immune disease, you may get another. There are many things to watch when you have AIH. Some people do go off medication, but they almost all have another flare up. I am considered to be in remission because my LFT's have been in the normal range with meds for over a year.  I was on prednisone and Imuran, now am on Imuran alone.  All meds have side effects, Imuran is much kinder to the body than pres.

Signs to watch for would be the same as when she was dx. If could give you a list if you would like.
