Finally GOT MY HEP C RESULTS!!!

Bill, NEW LEAF, FIG GUY, Jonney and everyone else that has responded to me these last two weeks while I have been waiting for the HCV test.  The liver doctor stated that the test was NEGATIVE for antibodies.  He told me that I need to go back to the rheumatologist because my issue is rheumatoid arthritis and he said once again he see's it all the time where people test positive for the inital test and that once the correct test is ran it comes back negative.  The doctor stated that I do need to see him in a year for retesting but that he see's no issue at all.

Of course I am very relieved but also extremely upset about how the rheumatologist treated me in her treatment stating that I have the disease.  I've made sure my liver doctor wrote to her, my primary care doctor and also the neurosurgeon who told me to go see her in the first place.  I'm also wondering how to contact the cdc since the paperwork stated that she was to report my case to them.

I want to thank each and everyone of you for all your support while I was waiting for the test results.  Without all of you, I would have no idea how to deal with all of this!

Jonney 4141 and GreatBird and everyone else...

I just got into another HUGE argument with the rheumatologist regarding these test results.  My gastroenterologist told me yesterday that I needed to go back to see the rheumatologist.  By the way, the gastro doctor called me himself and provided me with my news, which I thought was awesome and caring, compared to normal doctors who have their nurses call and give results over the phone.  Anyway, the dr. told me that there was another rheumatologist in that office that I went to and his suggestion would be to make an appointment to see her instead of the doctor who kicked me out of her office when she told me I had HEP C.

I called today, got the receptionist that I've been sparring with for the last few weeks.  She asked me to hold while she pulled my file (I had told her that the results were negative and that I wanted to see another rheumatologist in their office, I had only seen the rude doctor twice, once for the initial exam and the 2nd time to be told to go somewhere else) and the receptionist came back on the line and told me that she talked to Dr. Becker (the rude rheumy) and told me that I was never told that I couldn't come back in and it was written on the letter to all my doctors that she WOULD help me with my RA care.

I then laughed and told the receptionist if the note was in the file where I had called and asked about getting another appointment set up and the nurse calling me back and telling me I didn't need to ever come back.  The receptionist then raised her voice at me and told me that there was nothing like that in the file.  I told her that she should remember it because we have had the conversation twice.  So, the receptionist asked me if I'd like to schedule another appointment with the rude dr. and also stated that she DID have the results back from the gastroenterologist stating I was fine. I then told her I was calling to see another rheumatologist in their office and she told me I either had to see the rude one or none at all.  I told her that was unacceptable that I would not see a doctor who had treated me like someone that treated me like trash and I would never see her again.  She then told me there was nothing she would help me with.

The office manager then called me and I explained to her what happened and how the gastro doctor told me that this situation happens all the time.  I told her that I didn't appreciate the doctor assuming that I had the disease when the test was only an antibody test.  She then stated that rheumy doctor did run all the correct testing and that the gastro results were incorrect.  She asked me what tests he ran and I told her the RIBA and RNA and she told me that they didn't know what those tests were and that they were going to call the liver doctor.  Anyways, I wanted to let you all know that even though I tested negative for the tests, the rheumy doctor is still assuming that I have the disease.

Which doctor would you guys believe?

newleaf09 and GreatBird,

I definitely feel like an advocate for HCV suffers.  After the way I was treated by one doctor I realize that there are too many people that automatically judge people and imagine the worst.  What makes it worse is that aren't doctors supposed to "first do no harm" with their patients?  I felt that all she did was cause me harm, she refused to answer any of my questions or even let me stay in her office. Right after she told me " anyone tell you that you have hepatitis c" she then told me I needed an auto immune suppressent medication and then stated I did test positive for RA (which I had already tested positive three other times) and stated that she would not treat me because I needed to see another doctor.  She then said she was opening the door because it was cold in the room, she left and sent the nurse in with a piece of paper stating that I needed to see the specialist.  The nurse told me I didn't need to come back (I was still under the impression the dr. was coming back in from her earlier comment) but I agree with you guys that this doctor was at very least unprofessional, and in my opionion unknowledgeable to the point where she automatically assumed that I had HEP C.

After talking to the specialist and learning about many ways people get the disease I feel the least I can do is go in and see the Rheumy doctor again and advise her that she needs to stop judging people (immediately thinking they've done IV drugs, etccc) and realize that just because it comes back positive doesn't automatically mean that the correct test that needs to be ran ( the RNR I think it is called) needs to be done in order to prove that the test was correct.  My test that originally came back as reactive was the anti HCV test and no other test wsa ran.

I feel very passionate about the way people are treated with this disease.  I was told on August 20th that the test was positive so I've thought that I have this disease for almost a month.  I've done a lot of research and reading and joined this group in order to cope and educate myself.  I just wish my original doctor would educate herself instead of providing inaccurate information.  I will not use her as my rheumatologist, because you are right, how  many other times will she be wrong, or rude to me.

Being tested in another year is precautionary. A responsible doctor would recommend it.

As to your rheumatologist, I honestly don't think you should go back. If she's that rude and mistaken about the HCV (which is very often linked to RA), then what else is she going to be confused and unkind about? Find a better doctor. Find one who cares about their patients and who is knowledgeable and up-to-date.

That's wonderful news.  Rheumatoid is not good but the biological, Humira is very effective.  Gave my mom her shot of it today.  Would be happy to have you as an advocate for HCV sufferers

Sorry, Florida...

It feels a little strange to be told two different things... Very much so.  I'm still a little confused and wondering if this is for real or if I should stay concerned until my next appointment in one year.  The gastroenterologist stated I had nothing to worry about but I still can't help but be concerned about why the initial test came back.  My thinking is why didn't the rheumatologist realize that the test comes back positive with as many auto immune diseases I currently have (thyroid, anemia, pernicious anemia, and RA).

And I agree with you on Twizzlers, YUMMY.  But I feel my fight is not over yet.  I feel the need to educate others to not treat people unfairly if they do have this disease.  I can't believe how much I was judged by my doctor.  It was unforgivable...

Jonney,

Definitely I will let everyone know about this site.  Is getting the test repeated in a year, usual?  Would any of you confront the rheumatologist that kicked me out of her office (literally she told me should would not treat me because I had hepatitis C) and then left the office and had her nurse come in the room and escort me out.  I feel that I was treated horrible and feel that her actions need to be called upon.  Anyone have any ideas how I should address this situation, besides going in and telling her that she ran the incorrect test?  Also, shouldn't a rheumatologist know that the inital test for hepatitis can come up positive because of the diseases.  Shouldn't she tell you to get it confirmed instead of assuming that you automatically have the disease?

and, cut out the FIG GUY stuff. It's FL Guy (like florida). Don't want to give the health food people the wrong idea.  After all, I'm the one who believes that treatment food pyramid has Twizzlers and YooHoo at it's base. (Not that there's any wrong with fudgicles, NYGirl)

For a person who was pretty darn positive it must feel especially good to be so darn negative.  Congratulations.
