First Hurdle for 796 trial cleared

Got a call from the research study nurse who told me I was eligible for all three studies at their location, Roche weight-based, Wyeth 796 and the Schering 503034!

I told her I would like to participate in the 796 and she said that it made the most sense for me as the Schering enrollment ended in two days and I don't weigh quite enough for the Roche study anymore. Not that I couldn't gain it back in two seconds : ) Also the 796 only has two arms, and the Schering is 4.

I had to answer a bunch of questions (correctly) and then she said next step is the medical appointment (ekg, bloodwork, etc.). If I pass that, I am in and have to start within 19 days of the medical exam.

One thing that I am a little worried about is my last platelet count of 111. The cutoff is 100. Do platelets fluctuate like your viral load? Could mine have gone up on their own? And I remember someone saying that if you run up and down the stairs/exercise before your labs are done they will go up. Any science behind that?

Just ignore me for a little minute, I am posting before reading all that is available here on the forum. Sorry about that.

I don't know how I missed your discussion from Feb. 28 and it covers exactly what is going through my head. So let me get up to speed and follow it through. THEN, I may have a question or two for you.

Oh Cripes! I just found a post from Feb. 3 that chcnme posted. Everything you wanted to know about 796 but were afraid to ask! I haven't read all the links yet, but you know how it goes...all super gung ho and then you start wondering if it is the right thing.

But I guess that is what we all have to deal with when it comes to any kind of treatment. Thanks chcnme for all your research. And Chris, thanks for your good wishes. I am very fortunate to have a shot at this trial. I think. HA!

I didn't get the consent paperwork today, but I am sure it will come tomorrow. I will keep ya posted.

I'm glad you brought up the ClinicalTrials.org thing here, if that's the site you're talking about.  I'm not sure how many people saw the other posts about not relying on ClinicalTrials.org for 100% accuracy but as a resource, like this site and many others.  I e-mailed the six or eight sites that had e-mail addresses last night and showed "recruiting", and got responses within minutes from all but one that they are full.  As of yesterday, Baton Rouge was still recruiting.  I was only looking at PROVE 3.  I then tried to search on trials in Europe, and got basically nowhere.

I'm very glad for you, Foo, that you got your pick of these trials.  I really, really hope one works for you.  Keep us posted!!

Yup, more than chunky to begin with, but lost 55 pounds getting ready to treat. Still have 25 to go to reach ideal weight.

Only the Roche trial was for people that weigh more than 85k, so I don't qualify anymore. And apparently it is ok to be 25lbs overweight for the other two. Thank goodness.

Chris, you may remember, clinical trials site said not yet recruiting for the Schering trial at my clinic and it will CLOSE Friday, so it was incorrect on that one.

Needrelief, I am cirrhotic, stage A and it looks like they are gonna let me in a trial. The low platelets caused by the cirrhosis could cause me problems, but I am hopeful. So find out what is going on with you so you can figure out what to do!
