Well, this might not be worth anything but my mom had this strange idea to put baby powder on a cold sore, kind of to dry it out. I tried it a few times years ago (she tried it on me) and it worked.

Oooo, well Magic Mouthwash isn't the ticket for that. One of the gals, Izzy, used Vagisil for sores on the corners of her lips. Yeah, yeah, I know, but it seemed to help.

It is on the outside like a coldsore.
Denise, one option to consider is asking your doctor for a prescription for ‘magic mouthwash. It’s a swish ‘n swallow mix that contains a topical anesthetic, and also sometimes an antifungal like nystatin to help with the healing. This stuff is used frequently by cancer Tx patients, so the doctor should be aware of it.
I developed this persistent white plaque like deposit on the roof of my mouth; it was almost hard, and wouldn’t scrape off. The meds numb on contact, so you get immediate relief. They don’t last long; you’ll want to rinse four or five times daily, but it can help.
This might be a result of low white cells allowing bacterial or fungal infection to set in, so the doctor should also check your white blood cell count to make sure it's in range too.
Good luck—

I don't have experience with cold sores during tx (although my gums were as sore as heck).
Here's a thread that might help - it has different opinions about what to do. Magnum seemed to get a lot of cold sores:

If it were me, I'd try Spectda's recommendation first (water with a bit of vinegar) and only if it didn't work, look into something like Zovirax cream.
Maybe Magnum will weigh in.
Best of luck,
Susan
I have had the mouth sores, very dry skin, and dry eyes. I told my friend about the mouth sores. She had a severe brain injury many years ago and told me that during recovery she would get sores from thrush which I never had before, but heard the sores were like that. She told me the dr had her gargle with water and white vinegar (just a little).
The idea was to change the ph of the mouth. I've done this with rice vinegar because that's what I had in the house and strangely enough it went away. it actually felt soothing, did not burn. Maybe it will help for you. - Good luck- Dave
