Hep C from cat scratch?

So my mother has a cat and she has had HepC for about 15 years now. I never really use to think about it till my friend brought up the subject about transmission from the cat. I was trying to find information online about this but not a lot is out there on the subject. Has anyone heard of Hep C being transferred this way? Do i have anything i really need to worry about?

I asked my doctor that about 6 months back because I rescued a kitten that used to scratch the shhhh out of me and then scratch my son right after. My doc told me that the kitten couldn't pass it as I was on treatment and the virus was undetectable.

If someone has active HCV and the cat scratches and draws blood then was to scratch someone else and transfer the infected blood to the other individuals blood....then technically, yes a cat can transfer HCV. Does it happen a lot?....Ive never heard of it.

Q: Can you get hepatitis C from a cat scratch. If a cat scratches someone with hepatitis C can it be given to someone else living in the house that is scratched by the cat?
A: The
re has never been a reported case of hepatitis C being passed via a cat scratch. I cannot say it is impossible if there were a significant amount of blood involved and the scratches were deep - but it is my opinion that it would be highly unlikely to be infected with the hepatitis C virus is this way.

Others had addressed the cat scratch issue. I agree with what has been posted about the cat scratch issue so I did not address the cat scratch issue further.

However, since you mentioned in your post that your mother has Hep C but is not seeking treatment for it (possibly due to a misunderstanding about how Hepatitis C works), I offered some information and suggestions because I thought you may wish to help your mother get rid of the Hep C. Apparently I was mistaken. Sorry about that. Won't happen again.

Have a nice day.

"I just asked my mom and she said that she doesn't do the treatment because the type she has isn't considered "the bad one"."
---------------------------------------

I am not sure what your mother is talking about here. All Hepatitis C is "bad." All types of Hepatitis C can destroy the liver. So, whether she has Hepatitis C type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, does not matter in terms of liver fibrosis and destruction. Any one of them can destroy the liver.

In addition, Hepatitis C can cause many other medical problems in the body (extrahepatic manifestations) which can significantly affect the quality of life and the life expectancy of a person.

Perhaps you can suggest to your mother that she seek a new Hepatologist and discuss treatment options with that Hepatiologist. It is not advisable to wait until her liver fibrosis progresses. It is advisable to treat before the liver fibrosis progress. It is much more difficult to treat when one has advanced liver fibrosis and the chances for cure are significantly diminished if one waits until one has advanced fibrosis before treating. Therefore, it would be advisable for your mother to seek the advice and treatment of a Hepatologist and to become more informed about Hepatitis C, its consequences, and its treatment.

Best of luck in the future.
